Yeah, I do it but it is hard to do even with rev matching. Just something you have to learn to do (rev matching into 1st geat that is). If not, like most said, just gun it in second and you'll be fine.

 

Our experiences are identical. I have no problems downshifting into first, except when the temperatures dip below freezing.

 

You can also put a bit of pressure on the stick so you feel the resistance in 1st blip the throttle and it will slide right in when it reaches the right rpm. I found it a bit easier than trying to rev it up to x rpm and then try to shift into 1st.
