Yeah, I do it but it is hard to do even with rev matching. Just something you have to learn to do (rev matching into 1st geat that is). If not, like most said, just gun it in second and you'll be fine.

It's normal, and worse when its cold out and the fluids aren't warmed up yet. Just blip the throttle as you're downshifting and it'll slide right in.

You can also put a bit of pressure on the stick so you feel the resistance in 1st blip the throttle and it will slide right in when it reaches the right rpm. I found it a bit easier than trying to rev it up to x rpm and then try to shift into 1st.
