Stuck in the Snow and Burnt my Clutch :(
Stuck in the Snow and Burnt my Clutch :(
Last night I got stuck in my GF's driveway after it had snowed. I don't have winter tires and was stuck in 1" or 2" of snow/ice/slush. I couldn't believe it. I was really giving the car a lot of gas in fustration. I seen a small cloud of black smoke and it was accompanied by the most horrible odour. I thought it was the tires at first. I decided to leave the car at her house over night. This morning I when to get my car and parked it in my garage. The car just stinks! I opened the hood and realized that the smell originated from the clutch. The car spend the night outside and it still smells really bad in my garage.
I'm not really worried about it too much but I'm wondering if there will be any adverse affects. Has anyone had an experience like this? (the horrible smell of a burnt clutch)

Sorry about the clutch smell Piero.
I've had burnt clutch smell before but not on my G.
Try backing a 4500 pound trailer up a very steep 150 foot curvy driveway with a 6 cylinder standard Dodge truck. Glad it wasn't mine. Now that was burnt clutch smell.

you have have glazed the flywheel, too. I managed to do the same thing in a different situation though. Now, if I get the clutch hot, it slips easily.
I am still looking into clutches/flywheels,
I am still looking into clutches/flywheels,
ouch
one thing i've found when i take my car out for a spin around the street and (stupidly, hehe) stop and get stuck in the snow, rather than trying to burn out of there, rock it back and forth between drive and reverse and aftera minute or two you'll come unstuck

I thought you would have to really abuse it to burn it out!
Go take it for a drive and see if the clutch holds, you would know if the clutch is all glazed up when the car just revs on some gears and if it those that it is time for a new clutch. You just have to make sure that if you glazed the clutch really hard in did not put any hot spots on the flywheel or the pressure plate. If the pressure plate is fine then it should not cost you to much, all your going to need is just a new Clutch plate, but if the pressure plate has heat spots then you have to buy a new clutch kit (clutch, pressure plate, aligment tool, throwout bearing). Next time just push the car rather than trying to back out it drive way when it is icy.
good luck
