Re: the RX8 is faster than a 6MTG35

well i don't know what altitude that test was performed at but I personally got a 14.4 stock with my SEDAN at 1700 ft (corrected altitude-Phoenix).

if that test was at less than 2000 feet (most of the US), than they didn't push the G very hard.

Car and driver has the G35c 6mt doing 60mph in 5.5. In order to get those times out of the RX8 you have to rev the heck out of the thing and dump the clutch. I dont remember what the 5-60 is for the rx8 but it is CONSIDERABLYslower since it has no torque and you cant dump the clutch.

In the April '03 C&D:

0-60: G35C; 5.5, RX8; 5.9
5-60: G35C; 6.2, RX8; 7.5!

If that doesn't tell you all you need to know about the RX8's real world performance I don't know what would. A .4 sec deficit vs the G to 60 from a stop grows to a 1.3 sec deficit from a running start! Can you say "massive wheelspin to get the numbers"? Can you say "forget about clutch/rear tire life if you want that kind of speed"? The RX8 takes more than twice as much additional time to 60 from 5MPH than the G did compared to the standing start. So the only time you'll see the RX8 even close to the G is if you're willing to thrash the crap out of it.

Here are some more interesting stats from the same article:

The G does the 1/4 mile in 14.2 sec at 100 MPH, in 4th gear, and the RX8 does it in 14.5 sec at 96 MPH, also in 4th. Pretty close, right? The problem is that it takes the RX8 another 1.3 sec to get from 96 to 100 (still in 4th)!. Is there something wrong with that picture or what??

It looks suspiciously like "magazine test gearing" to me, designed to produce good ink to the 0-60 and 1/4 mile points, and never mind the rest...

Well, let's be careful with phrases like "real world performance." This does confirm that the RX-8 needs to do unhealthy things to the tranny in order to make good 0-60 times. Which most of us knew. But what does driving at 5mph have to do with performance? Nobody drives at 5mph on a track, not even autocross, so who cares about its performance at 5mph? As long as its near its powerband in first gear (15-20mph?), it should be competitive. And the only place 0mph matters is in extremely short races, like drag racing. The Mustang Cobra clobbered them both in that regard, but I'd be curious to see how well it keeps up on a track.

That said, the RX-8 didn't keep up with the G at all in that one video we've seen of them head-to-head at a Japanese track. They could have had a bad car on a bad day, but that's better evidence of real world performance to me.

"Real world" for most of us isn't on a track - it's at a stoplight. And there, a 5-60 number is a lot more valid to me than the clutch-burning, tire-squealing 0-60.

What I meant by "real world performance" is that most people don't make a common practice of tire-smoking clutch drops to get their cars up to speed (I know... some of you do...), so it seems to me the "real-er" performance comparison (on public roads anyway) is the 5-60 one. It's not to imply that people spend much time driving 5MPH, but we all have to get through that speed on the way up from a stop, and in higher gears we might not always keep our engines in the ideal power band. In the absence of a boatload of wheelspin or obsessive tach-watching, it's gonna take a lot more effort to get around fast in the RX8.

The disparity between the two cars' 0-60 vs 5-60 times as well as the 1/4 mile vs 0-100 times suggests that the G35C will handily outrun an RX8 in all but the most narrowly defined kinds of circumstances you describe, e.g. "near its powerband", where the G will still win anyway, as it does from a stop even with the RX generating massive wheelspin. Instead of "real world performance" maybe I should have said "in less than ideal circumstances, and/or in less than 10/10ths driving".

Speaking for myself, I almost never spin the wheels more than a tiny bit, and almost never rev-drop the clutch from a stop. That's my real world anyway, although I do enjoy flooring the throttle fairly often. On the other hand, I'm 51years old, so your mileage may vary...

Like you said BMWtoG you dont drop the clutch well most of us dont drop the clutch or tq brakes its because we care about our car unlike magazines. You show us a magazine editor who drives his car like he does in the magazines.

R&T is the most pathetic rag on the planet. You're better off reading Consumer Reports - LOL. They are THAT bad. What are you doing reading that POS pathetic excuse for a car magazine anyway?

True on the real world driving. I've owned some turbos in the past and that is what I hated about them. Someone would come up beside you and take off. They would leave me in the dust because I didn't have the turbo spooled up enough, even though I had the faster car 0-60 if I wanted to eventually ruin my clutch.

Hey, SBoden don't get misty about NOT blowing up your turbo, fer cryin' out loud! Being wallet-smart is nothin' to apologze for. It wouldn't have been just your clutch that would've gone with you racing off the line with all those bozos, and you know it. I've seen the repair sheets on blown turbo engines; I luv lookin' at zeros in front of the the decimal point. On someone else's charge card.

I'm relatively quick in the my G, but I'm not stupid quick. Win some, lose some.

Re: the RX8 is faster than a 6MTG35

I saw an RX8 in person today. It was a silver one. It looks a little bit better than it is in pictures. I just saw the back, and it wasn't that impressive (looked like the S2000). Too bad I couldn't race him, since he was going in a different direction. Otherwise, I could have put all this debate to rest. A time will come...
