Hitting the rev limiter, any damage?

Ok, this is the begining of a bad morning for me. I hit the rev limiter 3 times in a freaking row because I was half asleep and late for work and SOMEHOW FORGOT I WAS DRIVING A MANUAL! I felt the car trying to drop the revs since I over reved and by the 3rd time I looked at the RPMs and I hit around 7200 before it automatically dropped. Yeah I know I'm a freaking idiot, but I've been really stressed and bummed out lately. When I arrived at work I was really stressing out on hurting my baby and when I parked I forgot to take it out of gear at a complete stop without pushing the clutch and stalled. So my question is, did I f' ed anything up reving it to 7200? The car seems to run fine afterwards, but I'm still a little worried. It only has 2200 miles.

The rev limiter is intended to protect your car from damage, so don't sweat it. That's not to say it should be abused, but hitting it a few times isn't going to damage your car.

Yeah you should be fine as Mani said.
Don't stress about it too much dude, I've done it a couple of times because i was talking on the cell phone and not paying enough attention to the engine speed.
For me, loud music is the worst because i cant hear the engine rev'ing and thus hit the limiter. I've only done it a couple of times and engine is fine, i have 5,500 miles on her now.
Hope your stress level decreases.... just found a gray hair...DAMMIT!

You guys must not have been driving manuals that long - you should be able to "feel" the RPMs without having to see the tach, or hear the engine.

And pay attention when driving your G - you're missing the best part of owning one!

Re: Hitting the rev limiter, any damage?

The only times I have hit the rev limiter is if I am trying to squeeze every last drop out of the gear, don't recall ever hitting it without trying to. This car is very easy to tell when the rev limiter is coming - if the noise itself doesn't alert you to it, the stick and clutch vibration will.

bkchang79,

no sweat man. just don't make a habbit of doing that so often. the rev limiter is there for a reason, to protect us from doing some harm to the car.

Re: Hitting the rev limiter, any damage?

Getting use to a standard takes time. I have been driving for 30 years and have driven numerous standards. I still find myself occasionally stopping without depressing the clutch. I attribute this to the fact that our other car is an automatic and so is my truck and you get use to driving one or the other.

Its a real hoot when I hit the brake when trying to shift in my automatic. (just kidding)

Re: Hitting the rev limiter, any damage?

Sometimes I get lazy and stall the car because I'm not paying attention. I never hit the rev limitor on accident though, it's usually when I'm trying for 1/4 mile. Anyway get some sleep, you will be fine, besides, that car has probably been red-lined before when some idiot that works for Infiniti was moving it or taking it out for a joyride with a customer.

Thanks - Joey Avino

Re: Hitting the rev limiter, any damage?

Yeah..I met Mr.Rev Limiter one week after delivery. I have only done it twice and both times was in 1st gear. That gear winds up to redline so bloody fast it's scary. When you punch 1st be ready to grab second at around 4K rpm, you really won't lose any acceleration.

Back in 64 I had a Pontiac GTO, 389 cubes 365 horse and around 360 ft-lbs of torque. I ordered the car with a three speed Hurst stick shift...you could take 1st gear to around 80 mpg. I did not have a tachometer, I drove by engine sound...no rev limiter then. When you got to the top of the rpm range you would get a little valve float which made the V-8 break up just a little bit. That's when you knew it was time for an upshift.
