NO REGRETS, BUT DAM* WHY RX-8

O.K. FIRST OF ALL I'M VERY VERY HAPPY WITH MY G COUPE, ITS THE BEST CAR I HAVE EVERY OWN AND I JUST ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT, BUT IF IT WERE NOT FOR THE CREATION OF THE G-COUPE THE $29,500 RX-8 BLAZING YELLOW AUTO, SPORTS PACKAGE, AND NAVIGATION SEEMS LIKE A DAMN GOOD DEAL. I WOULD OF LIKE THE $7,000 DIFFERENCE THAT I COULD OF SAVE. MY G IS A (AUTO, PREMIUM, AERO PACKAGE, WHEEL PACKAGE, SAT, NO NAVI ). IMO THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO CAR IS THE INFINITI LUXURY BRAND NAME AND THAT LARGE AMOUNT OF TOUQUE THAT WE HAVE IN OUR G'S, BUT WOULD OF LOVE THAT NICE BLAZING YELLOW PAINT, NAVI AND THAT $7,000 IN MY POCKET.

SORRY, I KIND OF JUST WANTED TO GET IT OFF OF MY CHEST.

the auto rx8 is significantly weaker than the 6mt rx8 (50 or so less hp, maybe more)

also, the two cars are in different classes in regards to quality, power delivery, etc...and the rx8 burns oil like whoa.

Did you know that the RX8 AUTO only has a 4SPD tranny, the engine is detuned to 210HP and takes about 8.5s or so to reach 60. Seems like a good deal but I couldn't handle the thought of my a$$ being handed to a Civic.

Yep I had the chance to drive an RX-8 before I purchased my G. I didn't even pull in the dealership once I saw it in person. Neat engine but to me it looks pretty fugly. Besides, at the price they are selling them and with shear the number of Mazda dealerships everywhere, a year from now you will see them at redlights as often you see an Eclipse. Well, maybe not that often but you get my drift.

Re: NO REGRETS, BUT DAM* WHY RX-8

Hey guys!
I wouldn't say the 8 is ugly (course not, I own one..) its simply weird. Handles almost like a Miata, and spins fast enough for a 4 seater;however, not even close to a G.

Anyways, I've been driving an 8 for almost a week and its weak points are:

1. Interior quality does not seem to match a G (pick one: Sedan or Coupe.) Although its not shabby.

2. High maintenance: 300 miles, and averaging 15 mpg (how much does a G get under normal driving conditions?)

3. Oil: so far no problem, we'll see in a couple thousand miles. Nevertheless I expect more consumption than on a piston engine.

4. Acceleration @ speed: don't compare it to a G or Z (yet...lets see if Mazda raises the bar with an F/I setup..)

Now the good stuff:

1. Handling feels a lot more put down on the road than a G '03, w/aero kit & 6MT (my bosses car.)

2. Eventhough numbers don't reflect too much, it feels lighter (could be the electric assisted steering?)

3. Responds exceptionally well from a standstill (no need to waste the clutch as I heard before.)

------------------------------OPINION------------------------------
Although it might not be on the same league as a ***. beast as the G, it seems to be a very nice piece of engineering (backed by the wrong front badge - Mazda... (
It offers a lot of the sophistication and gadgets that the G has(and some other vehicles on the same or similar price tag) for a few bucks less. Thought I could put 2¢ on this.

Thanks!

I wouldn’t call the RX8 ugly either it does look pretty cool in person especially in black.

I just don’t know why would Mazda put a 4SPD auto tranny in the high revving RX8 and detune it to 210HP. They could’ve at least used the same power output as the 6MT RX8.

Re: NO REGRETS, BUT DAM* WHY RX-8

I guess its sales/marketing/production strategy: make people buy one trim. The low power engine (247hp) and lower power engine (210hp) :O) (gee....and I own one...) have a few mechanical differences: 6 ports against 4, and an extra air intake if I recall correctly from the CD I got.

I heard the AT is severly handicapped performance-wise, and that there is not a hughe difference in fuel (de)efficiency.

OK, that was me again...I love it anyways.

Yeah I wouldn't call the RX8 ugly either...saw my second one today parked outside - that bright yellow color and I thought it looked pretty sweet....very sporty. That makes 2 I have seen in Austin so far but I am sure there are more.

Re: NO REGRETS, BUT DAM* WHY RX-8

This is because 250 HP is only attainable with a 9000 rpm redline and an auto tranny can't handle it.

Ever heard of a high reving AT car? There isn't one that I'm aware of. That's why S2000 doesn't have an auto tranny either.

Re: NO REGRETS, BUT DAM* WHY RX-8

mazda has now revised its HP claims for the rx8, on the high side of a 5% error, mazda now claims 239 at the crank for the 6spd, and 197 for the auto.

Re: NO REGRETS, BUT DAM* WHY RX-8

The RX-8 is nice but like mentioned the auto sucks pretty badly. The FX35 and Murano can take the auto in the race. But from whatI read the auto RX-8 is suppose to come in 2004 with a 247hp model or at least something close to that.
