How to get the best 0-60mph start in 6MT coupe?
How to get the best 0-60mph start in 6MT coupe?
Hey everyone,
I have tried getting really good starts with the 6MT coupe, and I don't think that I have it down yet. I have been driving stick for most of my life (25 years old now), but my previous car was a Hyundai - nuff said...
Anyway, what I am looking for is some sort of advice on what the rpm level should be before I let my foot off the clutch (around 4000 rpm maybe?)... By the way, I would like to keep my VDC (vehicle dynamic control) on so that my tires will not spin - you will lose time if the tires spin... Also, I found that when I really gun it, I get some smell from the clutch, like it is burning, which it probably is because I have been getting the rpm up to about 3,500 rpm before I let off the gas... I know that this is bad for the clutch, but is there any other way to get good acceleration from stop with 6MT?
Any advice is welcome.... We can obviously mess up most cars while at speeds, but it is the 0-60mph which I hate losing... Thanks
Jaime

You're not going to get a good launch above 3000 RPMs, you will just squeal your tires like crazy. There's a lot of torque in this car so you'll probably get your best launch dropping around 2500.

With my experiance w/ 0-60 times It usually depends on the road surfaces. I had my best times to 60 Launching at around 3000-3500 Rpm with the VDC OFF. With the VDC on it detects wheelspin, cuts the throttle & bogs the car down to a lower Rpm.You want the tires to spin a little, that way it keeps your Rpm's up & closer to the engines power band.
My best 0-60 time using my Passport G-Timer is 5.30 Seconds followed by a 5.40 second run. This was on fairly rough asphalt lunching at 3,500 Rpm...
Here's a Pic of my G-Timer Install. Works great mounted on the top cubby lid(no-Nav) & I can close it when not in use so it's completly out of sight...

Re: How to get the best 0-60mph start in 6MT coupe?
Thanks guys... Any further experience that other people have is more than welcome. I will turn the VDC off when trying 0-60 times.... How about the clutch burning and the smell? That shouldn't happen around 2500 rpm, but it will probably happen between 3000~3500 rpm... Anything on this?
Thanks
Jaime

I heard that the VDC shortens the clutch life if you race with it on, so the burning smell could be the VDC bogging down the clutch when you drop it from high rpms.
Re: How to get the best 0-60mph start in 6MT coupe?
if u race...u burn ur clutch
when u want something, u lose something else
in dis case, if u wanan race, u lose ur clutch.....eventually

If your gonna race or get good times turn that VDC off, it's too bad it's got to always be on unless you hit the button. PIA

Chill out about burning the clutch...the clutch should last at least 50,000 miles, worst-case scenario.
As for the best starts, I find that 4,000rpm is a little high...the rear wheels brake loose real easy. Here's my advice:
Go to 2,500-3,000rpm and don't dump the clutch...let it out quick while applying WOT. In my point of view, I have achieved the perfect launch when the rear tires brake loose just a bit and let out that little short squeal. It means the rear tires broke loose for just a heartbeat, so there is not much shock to the transmission and the wheels get the most power without losing traction. You should also definitely turn VDC OFF. In case your rear wheels brake loose at your start, this way the engine won't cut off power (because once it does, say good-bye to your fast and fun rush to 60mph). Also, you'll notice that when you go to redline in first gear and then go to 2nd and dump the clutch, you'll notice that you will get a bit of wheelspin (sometimes I even get 2nd to 3rd gear wheelspin), and sometimes the VDC detects the wheelspin and cuts off the power for a few seconds and I'm just like, "AAAWW F*CK!!!" It's kind of ironic because the very thing that could save my life when I am going fast (if I lose control of the car), is the very thing that holds me back when I do wanna go fast...it's like a no-win situation. =(

racing with VDC on will burn your clutch... this has been documented. I only keep VDC on when its raining.

my clutch would smell burnt if i drove hard for about the first 2000 miles. If have only 1000 or 2000 miles on your ride, maybe its just wearing in like mine did. now I beat the hell out of it and get no smell.

Well, unfortunately, I was trying to race with the VDC on, and didn't realize that it was actually working against me... and I believe that is where the smell came from... I will try to do it without the VDC on this weekend and see what's what... Thanks to everyone for their replies and input... Good luck out there.

Re: How to get the best 0-60mph start in 6MT coupe?
Hey everyone,
I just got in my G last night for a ride. Turned that damn VDC off, and now its on with anyone that wants to race... hahaha.... I personally think that the car shifts better and I get to utilize it's full potential without the VDC on. Thanks to everyone for their advice and help.
I have also found that the perfect acceleration from a stand-still is when the rpms are between 2500 and 3000 rpm, because the wheels don't spin, but they do let out that little chirp and then they grip, then you get launched forward... Damn is this [censored] fun, and no smell anymore. My dealer didn't tell me about that when I bought the car. What a retard for not telling a 25 year old to turn the VDC off to get a good launch off the line. Like I'm not gonna use the car for what it's meant for...
Have fun...

Re: How to get the best 0-60mph start in 6MT coupe?
cool man, glad it solved your problems! I have a 3step ritual for whenever i turn on my car in dry weather...
1) turn off VDC
2) turn on the parking lights
3) turn on cruise control button
