Stock G35x 1/4 mile times

Why do the fastest 280 hp G35x's only run 14.8 in the quater...and Chicago X's 260hp motor run only 14.5. I am guessing it is because Chicago X is one of the better drivers however...

260hp RWD G's are running 14.3 in the quater...while the 280hp AWD G's are running much slower 14.8 when they only have an additional 150 lbs WITH different gearing (which I guess should compensate for the weight difference)

I am guessing it could be a difference in unsprung weight. Is it possible that besides the addition of ATTESSA (whatever), that the difference in the X's front geometry (unsprung weight) could of made that extra 150 lbs alot heavier than it sounds?

Thanks guys, I am just trying to figure out weather I should go with lightweight wheels to compensate. I dont want to be the slowest G at the track. Eventually I am going FI (later this summer, hopefully) and I know powerhousefan is making some killer 60's.

lighter/smaller wheels should help.

14.8? wow. do you brake torque? shift in manual mode? what's the temp outside? what altitude do you run at?
also, chicago x has some upgrades on his car, it's not stock. could be the reason he is running better. a simple torque converter will help you erase a few tenths of a second. it will help down the road with fi, so might want to start upgrading the trans now.

another thing is to take out the spare and try to race with less than 1/4 of a tank of gas.

well, I have found three 05 G35x's that get 14.8

ma_sha gets 14.8 with stillen exhaust and intake....the same stuff chicago X has. However, chicago X has the coolant filter...can that really help that much? he also has a 350z midpipe... none of his modifications are really "major" how much was your n/a 1/4?

heres something I found that was interesting. I heard that for RWD cars (and I guess for our since it is very biased) it is best to have some weight in our tanks...maybe more like 1/2 full. Our tanks are just fwd of our rear axles, so i am sure that weight gets transfered at wot to the rear and than = traction.

its only the front wd cars that you want to loose weight off the dummy rear end, since like a see saw, you are just lifting weight off the front end...loose traction.

I am no expert, just stuff I read in a magazine. I know our old mustang had the tank behind the rear axle for that same reason.

Those are offsetting variables. I wonder if it could even be tested within a margin of error, the tradeoff between tank weight and traction. With traction so inconsistent from run to run, not sure how it could be tested. Weight is bad so eliminating it and getting traction from proper launching is my technique. I got a 14.2 with a crawford and a injen intake first run ever. Oddly enough that may have been my best launch ever as well. Almost no lag on that run but ATCO is one of the better tracks to hook up on.

The first time I ran 14.7 with a crawford, K&N drop-in and stillen catback, torque braked in auto mode. After that it was downhill as the outside air temp rose. If I ever get my car back from the shop I'll have some FI times. Arrrggghhh......

Which day was that, X-man, at E-town last year? That would be a helluva run on that day IMO. Now what do you guess you'll run. I remember it was 82 or so at 10am and the car thermometer was 8 degrees higher than that. I think my best was 14.5 @ 95. The 95 mph was a tad hard to swallow but when auto Z's run 15 stock you know it's hot. I'm taking some time off to watch you run this year boy.

On both track outings, I ran my 03 5AT sedan (Z-pipe only) with about a 1/4 tank of fuel and no spare. My car has never had a traction problem on the track. Hell, it will barely chirp a tire. I always make sure to line up in the "groove" where all the Pro-mod cars line up in. It's much stickier. I also just do a quick spin of the tires and I avoid the water box at all costs. I also make sure not to have some ricer in front of me that chooses to do a burnout with his street tires and then proceed to drag water to the line. I shallow stage and I manually shift the 2-3 and hold 3rd through the finish. All these little tricks I've learned over the years seemed to have helped.

I'm actually considering airing up my tires to about 45psi to actually induce some wheelspin off the line. With the instant traction, my G seems to bog right off the line even though it 60 foots decently. I think with a little spin, the car can get into the powerband quicker. I'd like to see some mid 2.0 60 foots. I know it can do it.

did you search? My 05X is basically stock and ran a 14.7 @ 96mph

This is with no weight reduction whatsoever, actually, probably at least 100lbs of crap in the car also at the time. I think with simple weight reduction I could knock off a 14.5 at 97 with a cool day.

Neil, I don't think you need to worry about traction. The awd takes good care of that. I've never gone to the track prior to going fi but even driving on the streets the car lounched with no problems. Even today, with stillen s/c and tc/vb upgrades i have very minor traction issues. for the awd g35, you do want to shed some weight as our cars are heavy as pigs. i call my car a pig on steroids
i guess it's not bad at all if i erase close to 1.5 seconds off 1/4 mile with the stillen blower on stage 2.
the altitude and the temp makes a huge difference also. the track could also be a reason. i have gone to 2 different places with the same setups and ran 13.7 vs 13.2. that's .5 a second!!!

sounds good powerhouse. I always hear it is something like 100 = .1 seconds, but is more noticed in the handling department. Nonetheless, weight is too small of an issue to worry about in your daily driver(which is what I am slowely learning) what kind of wheels are you running powerhouse?

i'm all about the sleeper mode, meaning stock 04 17's with all season tires. i have considered to go with some lightweight wheels (nismos) but don't see how spending close to $3k will justify erasing may be .1 off 1/4 mile. put that money into something else. this car is my daily driver and i don't want anything happening to it. i have done just about everything to the trans for a safer driving.

oh, I thought I saw some five spokes on your vehicle before.

yea, I agree with the sleeper look, but untill I get FI, I need to have some individuality!

my favorite stock look is the sedan w/ coupe 18's. So I guess I will purchase the 19" Privat, and than throw on the 17 inchers whenever I go to the track.

thanks again powerhouse. I was concerned I would be burning too much rubber with the larger wheel/smaller tire combo.
