15K mile service - Go to dealer or not

Hi, I have a 2004 G35X with about 16k miles on it. Rosenthal Infinity & Infinity of Chantilly in Virginia quote 440 for 15k mile service while Passport infinity quote 360. All 3 offered 10% discount.

I so don't understand why 15k mile (or 12 month) service is so expernsive.

I am concerned about going to an outside mechanic b'coz the car has less than 30k miles at this time. OTOH, I would think it would cost 50% of $400, if I go to an outside mechanic. My old car was a sports car (japanese make) and I found a very good local mechanic once the car hit 30k miles. Should I just take the car to them?

Your input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Dude, I just paid $120 today at Pearson Infiniti in Richmond, VA for the 15K service. I replaced the cabin filter myself so that saved me around $100. I actually bought my G from Passport.

I agree with this. Get and oil change and change the cabin filter if you want clean air inside the car. Don't pay for anything else as most of the rest is paying for them to inspect things that are covered under warranty. You shouldn't have to pay to have them inspect something that is covered by the warranty...this is the biggest ripoff from dealers that most people don't realize. If you need to rotate your tires, go to a local tire shop and they should do it for about $25 bucks.

i was going to start a thread about the 15k service and the outragtrous price of it. but i was too lazy and had already gotten my car service 15k this week. it was wednesday, 2days ago actually.

My .02 is that ya its an arm and a leg they charge you for but i couldn't live with an easy mind if i had taken it to a local mech shop.
after the 4 hours it took!!!! the car ran pretty good actually. i was surprise on the way home that it was more sportier, like when i first rode her home from the lot. Im pretty happy with her improve ride now until she starts to degrade again and starts needing the 30k service. well anyway, after the bill was payed i was happy with the car. they gave me a list of what they did in the 15k and it was a lengthy list so im pretty secured in mind..

If you do decide to go to a tech shop, pray you get what you payed for. Dont go too far just to save a few bucks at the risk of hurting your car.

My local dealer in MN quoted $199 for the service, but I had to wait for a week and a half for a loaner. Had the oil changed and tires rotated at a place I use. I installed the cabin filter and the engine air filter in a hour or so, with advice from some people on this board.

The cabin filter seemed very tricky the first time, but I could probably do it in about ten minutes now. If you are slightly mechanical you can do this maintenance yourself.

What is actually supposed to be done is:
Rotate and balance tires
Replace air filter
Replace cabin air filter
Oil change
Inspect belts, fluids, brakes.
$200 for this would be a very good price. Anything more is pure profit. There is nothing here that requires any specialized expertise except perhaps replacing the filters which are different from other cars.

Change your own oil
Change your own cabin air filter
Change your own air filter
If you don't want to do it, have a mechanic look at your fluids and belts.
Have a tire store like Discount Tire rotate your tires.

Total price $100-150 at the most.

dealer service

my dealer (Harte Infiniti- Hartford CT)- 7500-$150; 15000-$300; 30000-$450; 60000-$570. add 40-50 for synthetic oil. 7500 is oil change, some motor&fuel conditioners, rotate, and various inspections, wash. 15000 adds replace engine air filter and cabin filter- for $150. for 22500 I took it to my local guy for $60, and saved about 100.

If you take it to the dealership for small stuff like that you are just wasting your $$. At least by the materials online and have your local guy do it.
Now for major service or repairs they are a good way to go because they know the car so well.

Just an Update

Thanks for your input everyone. Appreciate it.

I took the car to the mechanic I used to use before. They are very good. They told me that it will take almost 2 hours to replace the cabin air filter. So, total they were going to bill me for 3.5 hours, at $85 per hour, which was going to come out to $295. I just took the car to the dealer, b'coz he quoted 330, which is only $40 more.

They replaced the breaks. 17k miles and they replace the breaks. I hate it when they replace stuff like that without asking me first. The service advisor said the breaks are worn, infinity cars need them replace every 3k miles. If he called me before changing them, I would told him that I will get them replaced at 20k miles, which will be like 4 months from now. I haven't heard of cars that need breaks replaced this frequently!
