I always had impression from various mag reviews that G35S is a mid-size b/c its roomy interior, but window stick says it's a compact. I love my car, but just confused.

 

According to Road & Track. The G35 is a mid-size sedan. To me, the G35 is a large compact car.

I love it either way....

 

Personally I think that it's a midsize. My old car (Sentra) is a compact and there is no comparing the space.

i never sit in the back, so i'd have no idea as to how comfortable or uncomfortable the back seat is... also, i had an SUV before the G, so it would be hard for me to compare.. but i've ridden in "compact" cars before.. not very comfortable.. coupes are even worse..

Considering the G35 is virtually the same length as a BMW 5'er and only 3inches shorter than a Ford Explorer, I think that you'd have to consider it at least a mid-size sedan!

Mid-sized. This is a very roomy car.

ohh.. i thought there was something wrong w/ that picture.. considering i use to own an SUV and knew this car really wasn't close to having the same feeling of being higher up like i use to feel..

that's for clarifying.. but it is amazing it's only a little shorter than the explorer in length.. this is a long car.

I've noticed how tall the G is when viewed near other cars. Gives it tons of headroom and probably helps the aerodynamics, too. Backseat is spacious and was one of the deciding factors for me (doors also swing wide for easy access). I'm not sure how the government classifies cars but I assume it's black and white. The G must be right at the cutoff point for compacts.

It is cut & dried. Cars are classified by interior passenger & luggage (trunk) volume. A Compact has between 100 and 109 cubic feet, a Mid-Size has between 110 and 119 cubic feet.

Car: passenger volume + trunk volume = total (classification)
Acura 3.2TL: 96 + 14 = 110 (Mid-Size)
BMW 3-series sedan: 91 + 11 = 102 (Compact)
BMW 5-series sedan: 93 + 11 = 104 (Compact)

Note that these above are EPA's numbers, not manufacturer's numbers. I can't find EPA numbers for the G35, but Infiniti's numbers show it here:
G35 Sedan: 98.0 + 14.8 = 112.8, placing it as a Mid-Size, though the EPA classifies it as a Compact. EPA v. MFR numbers seem to vary by as much as 2-3 cubic feet, so they might be rating the G35 at 109, but I can't tell.

At any rate, it's cheaper than a 3 and bigger than a 5. Definately longer than the wife's Grand Cherokee (but lacking in cargo volume).

Although, my 6'2" coworker bumps his head on the roof and has to lean the seat back when I drive to lunch. I do have the sunroof scraping a couple of inches off.

4. clearence is higher than my old max, marginally smaller interior than my old max.

next time my friends tell me "Your G35 looks small", I'll tell them 'yeah, the window sticker says it's a compact, but SURSEY SAYS It's a MID-SIZE'

This is why i love the G too much. When you see it on the road it looks like a sport sedan. When in fact it's much bigger....It's a wonderful illusion
