changing the oil

This may sound like a newbie post but what will I need to do to get to the oil filter. Is there something I need to unbolt and take off. Where are the jack points

Re: changing the oil

I'm not sure if there's a center jack point to raise the front of the car at once. I'd recommend Rhino Ramps or some other ramp to raise the front of the car for an oil change.

Once you're under the car, there's a large underbody diffuser (large plastic panel) under the engine bay. There's a small hole in the passenger side that supposedly is for draining oil and accessing the oil filter... but I fear it would be messy. There are 14 bolts and one plastic clip holding that diffuser in place. Once it's off, the oil filter is an easy target.

Dang dang dang. I knew it wasn't going to be easy. I will have to crawl under there to check it out. I noticed that my oil is looking very dirty at ~2000 miles and wanted to change it out.

Re: changing the oil

I took my to my regular mechanic and have the oil changed for $15.

Why bother doing it yourself?

Re: changing the oil

I quit changing my own oil a long time ago, besides the time and mess, there's the disposing of the old oil, what a PITA if you don't have a truck or old car to haul it in to dispose of it! I'd rather spend the money to have it done!

Re: changing the oil

ABQ there is no problem disposing the old oil. I just let it run into the gutter. Eventually it seeps down through the cracks and goes away.

Just kidding. Where I live the garbage collectors provide the jugs for the oil and the little baggies for the filter. they pick it up on trash day. A couple of years ago I bought a card for 10 oil changes at a local oil change place. It really comes in handy and after a few times of having them change the oil for you, you'll wonder why the hell you did it yourself for so long.

My worry would be for them either making a huge mess by not being able to work around the underbody diffuser or them losing half the bolts for it if they had to take it off. The best compromise would be for me to remove the diffuser, go get the oil changed and then put the diffuser back on myself.

Re: changing the oil

shodog, LOL, yeah, that would **** some people off! I got into using the Ford dealer's "FastLube" never had a problem with them, and they never tried to sell me wipers or headlights or anything, plus, they never scratched my vehicle like JiffyLube did, never went back to them for sure! Oh, I had no idea the oil change on the G was so complicated, does that diffuser have to come off, geez!

Re: changing the oil

I'd bet $50.00 that those Jiffy Lube places aren't replacing the crush washer on the drain plug like the manual says to do.

Re: changing the oil

I bet you $50 that you don't really need to replace the crush washer. This requirement is most likely designed to fill the pockets of the dealership.

You mean like the brakes that wear out after 12k?

Re: changing the oil

I'll bet when the Jiffy Lube tech forgets to put the drain plug back in your oil pan and starts you engine, then says, "oops," that you'll wonder why you took such a nice car to a cheap-@$$ place to have it jacked with.
