You've got it backwards. A comprehensive claim will not up your insurance rates. Collision claims will. Additionally, most people have higher collision deductibles than comprehensive deductibles. You lose twice by calling it a collision claim.

I was unclear in my explanation, but we are saying the same thing... I should have said "Just for reference, to avoid a rate increase, you need to claim the the debris (tire in this case) NEVER hit the road before it hit the car. If you do not specify that the debris hit your car before hitting the road:The insurance company will file the claim under collision rather than comprehensive.

Then maybe I still disagree. If the debris hits your car directly from a vehicle, it can be filed as collision because it can be identified to a particular vehicle. If the debris is in the road and then you hit it, it is comprehensive.

That was how my State Farm agent described the policies. I believe the main difference is the avoidance factor. I had no way of avoiding the tire tread.

It's very possible that our insurance companies have different policies, but I've been through MANY comprehensive claims over the years with various ins cos, mostly chipped or cracked windshields from rocks. They have always told me that if the rock comes right from dumptruck, then collision. If the rock was bouncing or I didn't see where it came from, then comprehensive.
