Getting better gas mileage?

Re: Getting better gas mileage?
Your numbers seem a little low to me guys. I've only had my G one week now, 500 miles, and filled up yesterday, 358.5 miles to 16.25 gallons of 93 octane.
That's 22mpg, 80% highway miles. Yeah...I've been babying the G, but have also gassed it to 5K rpm a few times; the temptation is too great to keep it below 3K like the manual suggests (first 1200 miles). And as the engine breaks in, I expect to get better mileage.
It looks like some of you are getting your readings from the trip computer...in my experiences these usually read high, I suspect that the G's may be reading low. Figures like 11, 13, 14 mpg seem very low, unless you all drive like maniacs!

Re: Getting better gas mileage?
Well 22 MPG is not bad but the specs say that you're supposed to get 34 MPG on the highway so you're pretty off the specs I'm afraid. I was getting really good mileage too the week I did a few longer distance runs on the freeway. My city mileage is between 11-13 MPG on a minimum of 91 octane.

Re: Getting better gas mileage?
shouldn't we be getting at least 35mpg? i mean.. c'mon infiniti... don't you want to keep up the "35" theme? while they're at it.. we should have a 35 year warranty..

Re: Getting better gas mileage?
The wife and I took the 35S down to Carmel this past weekend (2/15-2/17). The trip was 255 miles with 80% freeway at 75-80 MPH except for 10 miles of stop-and-go south of San Jose. The car got 23.4 MPG. This is probably typical considering the high speed.
On the same trip my '98 turbo Passat wagon would get 27-28 MPG. But this is not a good comparison. The Passat has marginally better aerodynamics, smaller tires at higher pressures, and a smaller engine probably working more efficiently.
Other info for comparison: stock sedan with sport suspension, Goodyear GS-Ds at 32 PSIG, no aero packages but I did add the underside diffusers, Chevron Supreme gas.
This was my first long drive in the G and it was wonderful. The wife was completely comfortable at 85+ MPH.

Re: Getting better gas mileage?
Second fill up: 319.8 miles, 15.9 gallons = 20.1 mpg. This time I had a lot more city miles, and a few more stabs at the accelerator than before.
What I noticed is that the rpm is relatively high at cruising speeds. At 80mph,
my '96 Altima did ~3500rpm (24/25mpg) 2400cc,
my '02 Acura TL ~2500rpm (26/27mpg), 3200cc
and the G ~3100rpm (22mpg) 3500cc
Infiniti could have used a taller gearing ratio (terminology?), for fifth that would have given better mileage, but I guess the decision was for performance, all-around.
