RT Cats and Stillen Exhaust!!!

Just put on my RT cats in yesterday. They definitely added some HP. Haven't tested the A/F yet (hopefully tomorrow). But, let me just say this, the combo is LOUD, almost uncomfortably so. But, before you jump to conclusions, I invite you to hear them at the meet in 2 days, as the sound level is a largely subjective measure. The car sounds meaner now, especially when I ran into this guy in fwy traffic - a TT Supra. I gave him the thumbs up, he rolled down the window and asked "what have you dane to it?" I told him. He replied "Jeez that car sounds incredible!". To me the gains are worth it and I like the sound. I just wish it wasn't as loud as it is at partial throttle.

But there is just nothing like this! This car is FASSSTTT. I will definitely beat that 6MT Z...

And I can only imagine what it will do with the right A/F that I am about to get.

Re: RT Cats and Stillen Exhaust!!!

Yeah Clint! Can you imagine.... it is REALLY loud - but yet again another performance gain!!!! I was in disbelief!!!

I have been driving around today and thinking to myself (never thought I would say this): "This is just TOO loud!" But, the performance is there... and it sure is mean-sounding, very mean-sounding. Sounds exactly like a z with a set of high-flows, only even more aggressive, if that was possible.

No sound/video clips (no digicam), unless we make one on Saturday at the meet (in SoCal). Are you in SOCal, GSedan35?

I hope I can get the right program in it by Saturday.

Re: RT Cats and Stillen Exhaust!!!

Hey, if its too loud maybe Stillen can produce "quiet tip inserts" for exhaust same as Comptech makes for my Accord. They made a significant difference in noise reduction.

Re: RT Cats and Stillen Exhaust!!!

AV6 - I would go for those if they ddn't change the HP output.

Ted- Yep - the elves were overheating - I got a call on my cell - Santa was using profanities!!! GO figure.

See you in the AM. I dressed up my engine - got rid of the engine cover (wanted to do that for a while - too much heat!). How soona re you gonna get there? I may not be able to do the cruise - are you doing it?

Re: RT Cats and Stillen Exhaust!!!

The RT cats (as well as the Crawford) does not fit very well on our cars. So a mod to the double wall around the kickplate (foot area) on both sides was required. We had to cut an "X" on the double wall right above the cats and hammer it in. I know it is kind of blunt - but who is going to climb under there?

The car was shaking at partial/hard starts - obviously from the exhaust (RT cats) hitting the wall of the body. Now no impact/vibration, and it is a lot smoother and most importantly quiter. I guess the close position of the cat resonated more sound into the body - it is really not so bad now.

Re: RT Cats and Stillen Exhaust!!!

I would love to see pics of how they weren't fitting. Doesn't make sense they their would be a differance in fitment and also wouldn't be a issue in other FM applications.

Re: RT Cats and Stillen Exhaust!!!

Here is the promised update.

Took the car down to TS today and checked the fuel mixture with the RT Cats/Stillen Exhasut combo.

THe result: the target 12.8-12.9 A/F ratio!!! So, the richened program that we used to accomodate my first torque converter came out to be perfect for this combination (once the torque converter was returned to an apparent "within-spec" stall of 2600 rpm). So, the short answer, TS now has the the right ECU for the plenum/RT cats/exhaust combination.

I was secretely hoping that we can squeeze a little more power out of this baby, but on the other hand, the car is running extremely well, so it's no wonder that the mixture is already optimum.

Enjoy guys

P.S. >> I have pretty much reached the end of the road for bolt-on N/A mods (minus the costly cams/headers proposition). If I were to do the latter two as well, I may gain another 30hp (being optimistic yet realistic here). IMO, these 30 hp are not worth $4000 - this will pay for more than 1/2 of my upcoming TT setup (which will give me 5 times more power).

Stay tuned for my "end-of-the-NA-road" report, complete with a Dyno, to be posted soon (I hope this week).

Gurgen
