UPDATE:

I found a replacement Fuel Door Actuator
Part #78850AL500 for $67. It will take 5 minutes to replace.
The stem on my plunger broke. Is this the part I would need to fix it? And can it be found online? I checked infiniti-parts.com and they don't seem to have it.

This happened to me one time. I took my g/f's '03 G Coupe out and it needed gas the light was on.

I pulled into the gas station and start pressing the fuel door it's not popping open. Now I'm in a semi-panic feeling like a complete idiot cause I can't get the fuel door open. I call the g/f.

We both work at Carmax. She had this happen to her on a G sedan. For 15 minutes she and a few other people couldn't figure out how to get it to open, and then somebody decided to hit the unlock button and it popped open. I completely forgot about it and she suggested it and it popped open.

Still not quite sure why the car has that feature.

The only gas opener button is the unlock button. Whenever the driver's side door is unlocked with the key fob or the power door lock switch the gas tank cover should unlock. If it neither locks or unlocks, you have the opposite problem as this thread's title... yours stays unlocked. Either way, the solution is most likely the same. You can find the little plunger thing if you open the trunk, undo a couple clips on the passengers side trunk lining and pulling it down. You should see a little white plunger thing and that's the lock.

Sorry. I haven't been here in a while. The replacement did take about 5 minutes. There is a black retaining ring inside the fuel door compartment. Twist this ring and it comes off. After you pull the padding away from inside the trunk, unplug the electrical connetor from the actuater and then it pulls right out.

Push the new actuator through the hole, twist the rataining ring back on and plug the electrical connector back on and that's it.

Not worth a drive to the dealer unless it's a warranty repair.
