Super Charger 5AT sedan

This post may belong in the mod section but since it only pertains to the sedan i'm posting it here.My question is has anybody installed a super charger on a 5AT sedan yet. I spent an hour at my local dealer today looking at a 350Z, MT coupe and 5AT sedan the only differnce that I can see is the mechanical fan other than minor things that would have no effect on installion. The mechanical fan is easy to remove and a custom fan shroud c/w fans could be made for about 500 CND.My dealer want's 1,000 CND for a factory coupe set up which is a direct bolt in.If somebody has done this already or I missed any thing please let me know. P.S. the wife want's F.I. ASAP

Re: Super Charger 5AT sedan

Here is the deal .The electric fan from the Z or the Coupe is NOT a direct bolt on, I don't care what that dealer has told you. The electric fans are controlled by the ECU in those cars - and there is no easy/feasible way to make our ECU do it (the 5AT sedan ecu). My buddy DaveO is in the process of doing the conversion - but you have to use a separate probe and probably a 3rd party electric fan to make it work.

The electric fans on the MT sedans and all coupes/Zs come on at the same time - both of them. The harness for the 5AT's pusher electric fan does NOT fit the coupes/Zs/MT sedan's electric fans - and even if it did - you can't just plug it in. The pusher fan is a backup fan and comes on much later then needed.

Besides, this is a MOOT point for you. THe only supercharger worth getting is the Dreamworks one - and it DOES work on the 5AT sedan without any mods to the fan! And with the supercharger, you won't notice the ~5-8 hp that is anticipated to be had with this conversion.... The Dreamworks will be available within a month, and carries a 3year/36000 mile warranty. If you are looking to buy a new car - have your dealer install it at the time of purchase - and oyu will have a 5 year/60000 mile warranty on it (I am not sure as to the mileage of the warranty - I know it's 5 years on a new car - but not sure if it's 60K, 48K or 50K).

Of course, there is the the most elegant option - TT, in which case you will still not need the conversion. But it is a great mod - I am thinking of doing it.

The only one that will NOT work with the mechanical clutch fan is the ATi procharger (and maybe Vortec as well).

...the only supercharger worth getting is the Dreamworks one...

If you have the 5AT sedan then I agree... Assuming the Dreamworkes unit is released in the next couple of months, it will likely be the only 5AT sedan SC option for a while.

But for those of us with 6MT it is far from the only option. I spoke to Dreamworkes prior to purchasing the Vortech and still chose Vortech. Among other things, spending an extra $2000 (in my case) to warrantee the engine seemed like pretty expensive insurance.

Plus, there are SOOOO many unanswered questions surrounding the Dreamworkes unit that it's pretty hard to judge it yet. To wit:

What specifically is their ECU solution? How do I modify it if their factory settings don't meet my exact need? Will every Infiniti dealership be an authorized installer (um, NO)?. How do they know that it will fit the G35 sedan? When I talked to them they said something like "oh yeah, it will fit because it's the same engine" which meant that they had no clue at the time. There are important differences even between the 6MT coupe and the 6MT sedan as far as how much space there is to mount a supercharger (I know this because I've seen the Vortech install on both cars and they absolutely do not fit the same). And neither of the G35s has as much room as the 350z. Aside from mounting space and piping considerations, there are very important differences in the ECU program between the Coupe and the Sedan (again, having seen an SC install on both I know that you cannot use one piggyback ECU solution for both the coupe and the sedan, nor can you reflash the existing ECU the same way). Even if they licensed the bit-twiddle software from Technosquare, after having talked to Danny there is NO WAY I would trust anyone but Technosquare to modify the ECU.

Dreamworkes may have a solution for the 350Z in the next couple of months, but I'll bet $100 PayPal right here, right now that they don't have a no-custom-install-required "bolt-on" solution for the G35 5AT Sedan until June 1 at the very earliest.

When I sead it was a direct bolt in I was not talking electricly controling them is easy (eg. Flex-a-Lite vsd). The dream works unit may never be avalible as a drop in.They don't even know there are differnces between the cars.My biggest worry is tuning as no shops around here instill a lot of confinence. All work other than tuning would be done by myself. As to my dealer doing anything the service manager thinks I wrecked the car when I lowered it and put 20,s on it.Next dealer is 20 hours drive away. The sales men and there manager love the car but have no control over service.Service charges full list on every thing.Any where else that I have ever bought a vehical I have gotten a discount on parts.

Re: Super Charger 5AT sedan

the shop that did zimbo's supercharger told me they could make the Vortech work on the 5AT. No mention on amount of labor invovled etc but they assured me they could make it work. Take a vacation down to the Carolinas!

Re: Super Charger 5AT sedan

I talked to the on Monday about coming down.Right now I'm waiting for my electric fans to come along with stillen exhaust and sway bars. The trip down and back is 3500 miles! So I have some thinking to do. If my fans work the way I hope, then for under 300 usd any kit that fits a 6MT sedan shoud fit the 5AT. Allthought turbos may have trans clearence issues on 5AT but I have not locked at that issue

Brent,

I have completed my fan conversion and am in the process of testing it.

FYI, the 350Z/G35C dual fan assembly's shroud would not fit my sedan's lower radiator support assembly without significant modifications. Also the IPDM E/R and Engine Room Wiring Harness are different than the Coupe's.

Re: Super Charger 5AT sedan

Dave did you use a 350Z fan assmbley or after market fan.I am using a flex-a-lite 220 & vsd. I will make brakets to attach it as I don't like the though the core method.

Re: Super Charger 5AT sedan

Brent,

Like you, I don't like the through the core mount. Plan one was a single Flex-a-lite fan mounted on a Infiniti/Nissan shroud with their VSC. Revised plan. Mounted the fan on the stock AT Sedan shroud.

I elected to use a single fan and leave the stock electric aux fan in place. They currently operate sequentially with the aux fan lagging.

PM me if you'd like more info.
