My latest 6MT sedan dyno (w/ Vortech & Stillen)
My latest 6MT sedan dyno (w/ Vortech & Stillen)
Heads up, Sedan guys... We have nothing to be ashamed of...
My scanner is on the fritz, so it will be later this evening before I can put up the graphs, but I just got back from dynoing my 6MT Sedan on a DynoJet at a nearby shop (in Durham, NC).
My only drivetrain modifications from stock are the Vortech supercharger and a Stillen exhaust.
I did three pulls, one each in 3rd, 4th, and 5th gear. They let me "drive" the car, so it was pretty fun (although I did get a bit scared in 5th gear when the speedometer read 136 MPH). I ran the car up to about 6350 rpms on each run.
The SAE corrected 5th gear dyno results were: 355 WHP, 306 ft-lb torque. Uncorrected HP (just for gee whiz purposes) was 367 or something like that.
I'm pretty stoked about those numbers. They are within a few HP and a couple of foot-pounds of torque of Dollar99's 6MT coupe, which has a Borla exhaust and a Vortech kit that was installed and tuned at the same place as mine.
But what I'm most happy about is that the torque curve is extremely flat, the HP curve is very smooth, and the A/F ratio hovers right at 12.0 even in the 5th gear pull. In fact, the guy who owns the shop remarked that the graphs looked fabulous and safe. With the timing retard programmed into the Vortech kit at upper RPMs, I'm hoping (fingers crossed) that this is going to be as safe and reliable as forced induction can be.
Incidentally, my buddy who has a 350z with the ATI kit was over there at the same time doing tuning. He has the AFC II, the J&S timing retard box, a gawdawful-loud true dual exhaust, test pipes, and custom headers. His peak HP measurement done right after mine was 370 whp, but his HP and A/F graphs looked really scary above 5500 rpms. I'm sure once he gets it tuned it will smooth out and be safe, but until then I'll trade 15 horsepower for peace of mind any day.
Full dyno shots later--sorry again that I don't have them.

Good job Zimbo.

Who ashamed? . Dont know about others, myself felt the same response from sedan and coupe when I test drove both before I purchased the sedan (need 4 door).
By the way I posted comparison today in Technical and Modification forum regarding sedan having pretty much the same HP based on actual SAE numbers.
As far as your DYNO would like to see the print out, however
eventually your goal shoul be to build a little more torque to be close to HP level otherwise great job. How much boost you've got? Did you do TS ECU reflash? Now you pushing 428HP/368TQ at crank (17% drivetrain loss) and I bet it feels great. Also would like Im sure as others to see your 1/4 mile times whenever it is possible.

Re: My latest 6MT sedan dyno (w/ Vortech & Stillen)
Boost is currently between 7 and 8 psi. From what I understand, it's hard with a supercharger to get torque much higher than about 310.

Kewell Guy! I wish you the best of luck with the safety, reliability, and added horsepower and torque of your Vortech mod! I really am looking forward to seeing some dragstrip times - are you planning any 1/4 mile runs? If so, any time soon ? I really want to see what type of 1/4 mile gains you get with this setup. Thanks in advance.....GeeSpot
Re: My latest 6MT sedan dyno (w/ Vortech & Stillen)
Gad, that thing must be fun to drive! If you are correct about reliability, I can see a few more sedan kits getting plumbed up soon...

almost 100HP increase. must feel like a rocket. i assume you have made some mods regarding stability and are using wider tires?

Cool Zimbo, 7.5-8psi w/intecooler is beautiful.
Your a/f ratio starts lean which is safe at low RPM and goes down to safe side and continiue to stay that way on upper RPM. Eventually you might add headers (I like Stillen) get colder Iridium plugs (if not already) then increase a/f ratio to 12.5-6 but dont do it more unless you'd do low compression internals which is $$$$$$$$$$$. Or forget about it and leave as it is .
Anyway, enjoy and I want to see at least flat 13s and realistically with this power you should break 12s (1/4mile) assuming you have light wide rims and sticky tires. Please dont put 19" or 20". Good Luck!

Actually, what you're seeing is *wheel* HP, not crank HP. The published 260 HP number for the sedan is at the crank. My pre-Vortech dyno was 217 HP at the wheels.
Translated, this means about 425 horsepower at the crank compared to 260/280 stock.

Re: My latest 6MT sedan dyno (w/ Vortech & Stillen)
Great numbers...I'm looking forward to seeing how it translates on to the track.
Just had a few questions though:
1. How much did it end up costing?
2. I'm assuming the warranty is voided?
3. Have you done/do you have plans to beef up the rest of the drivetrain to handle the power?
I may have to end up selling the Z and maybe need to begin to modify the G
... then maybe I'll work on both.... with 350rwtq naturally aspirated with stock motor with the Z.... the rides are equally as fun... but a little different.

zimbo,
Awesome!
Any pictures of the installation? How did you deal with the air intake/filter? The dang AC lines look like they'd be in the way.

Re: My latest 6MT sedan dyno (w/ Vortech & Stillen)
DaveO, the Vortech has been on my car for about 1300 miles now. For the intake the installer had to use a flex pipe and put the filter down near where a CAI would go. Here's a link to a few photos they took:

Thanks Steve.
A real clean installation. Did you/they have to change out or modify your oil pan?

Re: My latest 6MT sedan dyno (w/ Vortech & Stillen)
They tapped the pan but did not replace it. I personally like the idea of the Vortech using the same lubrication as the engine. Easier maintenance, same temperature, etc.

Yes, track times would be awesome to see. Has anybody with a supercharger reported times yet? Any speculation?
