When I shift from park to reverse...

it seems like my car slams into reverse sometimes and it does not feel good. I think this problem is because when I start the car, it acts like it hasnt been started in a week and it -5 degrees outside. (Even tho is has only say for a few hours) When I start the car after it has sat over night, or when I go on my lunch break from work, and when I leave work for the day, it sits and idles above 1k for a long time. Too long to sit there and wait for it to come down on its own, so I put it in reverse, and BOOM, it slams into reverse and then the idle goes down.

Does anyone else have this problem? Why does it idle above 1k for so long after the car has sat for only a couple of hours. It doesnt seem like this is good for the car in the long run.

It doesnt do it when the car is really warm (like running errands, gas station, etc.) Only after a few hours of sitting.

I have always wondered why it idles so high for so long. I have a trailblazer (I know, totally different car) and when I start it after sitting over night, just a couple of seconds after I start it the RPM's drop down under 900 and warms up.

06 sedan 5AT

Thanks

My idle does this too, but it doesn't clunk into gear. It's a solid shift (you definately know it occured) but not hard enough to concern me at all. How long does it stay above 1K? Mine starts at like 14-1500 and steadily drops from there, maybe 10 seconds to get to 1K I think. I usually let it creep down a bit before I move.

My car slams into reverse when ever there is load on the trans when the car is in park. Like when I stop and put it into park on an incline, then put it into gear, it will slam when I get to reverse...
It's got me concerned and I hate how my new apartment parking spot is on and incline. Also my parking brakes do nothing, I put it on and the car still rolls back.

i've noticed the long high idle too, but am not worried about it, pretty much every car i've driven has done this, FI or carb'd, tap the gas and it usually drops quicker (on a carb it's basically the choke engaged, you'd tap the gas to disengage it, i think the programmers wanted some continuity for drivers, so works the same way), as for the lurch when putting it into gear: reverse isn't like drive, where the clutch smooths out the transitions and consequently the shift. it's basically engaged much quicker and more firmly than the forward gears, and considering that the ratio is closer to 2nd than to 1rst, it's no surprise there's more resistance as it engages at a higher engine speed. (reverse is kinda like when you put the auto in manual mode and hold first, or put it into L or 1 or 2 on older autos, for engine braking and what not.)

if you're worried about it, check the things that can be causing a high idle (sensors, vacuum lines etc), if it's really a problem, check the tranny, and maybe get the reverse valves changed to engage more slowly.

just some suggestions

My '04 coupe does this as well, but I'm not really concerned. My sister's Acura does the same thing and has done it for the past 100k miles she's owned it with no problems (she bought it with 15k and now has 115k). I wrote it off as normal

Try putting the emergency brake on before putting the car into park. That's what the owner's manual says to do and I tried it, my car doesn't roll at all.

wife's pathfinder(same 3.5L v6) does this too. Not always, but after it rests for a while so to speak. My G does NOT do this and I am so glad, it is kind of annoying.

It's called torque lock. My 03 will do it if I'm on a rather step incline. It's normal. As for the idle, again, normal. I have noticed that the 05+ loaners I've had do have a rather high cold idle (1500rpms initial). The correct warm up procedure is start the car, let it idle for 10-20 seconds depending on ambient conditions and drive at a moderate pace to let the engine warm up quickly. An efficient engine is a warm engine.
