Help - Got a huge speeding ticket!

Let me just start off by saying the G35 sedan feels incredible at 85mph on a crisp Saturday morning. I'm sure a lot of you have gotten your cars way pass that speed. But how many of you have gotten slapped with a $224 ticket for going 80mph in a 50mph zone? Yup, I'm embarassed to let everyone know that I got caught this morning while speeding to a friend's place to go skiing up a Steven's pass, which by the way rocked!

While I clearly deserve the ticket, I'm looking for people's experience as ways I can possibly get this ticket from showing up in my otherwise clean record? The last ticket I got was 3 years ago and I believe it should've cleared my record by now.

I need some real experienced responses here please. What are some ways, in the Seattle, Washington area I can get the ticket from appearing on my driving record?

The state trooper that pulled me over was using either a laser or radar detector. She marked "SMD" on the ticket.

For all you Seattle/Eastside residents, do not think the 520 bridge is safe from speed traps! I had to learn this the painful way .

In King County, you can get a deferral (once per person). Basically, you'll pay a $100 administrative fee and they will hold onto the ticket and it won't be on your record. You then need to not get another speeding ticket within a year otherwise you'll get both a new ticket as well as the deferred one. If you survive a year, it won't be on your record.

What happened to your radar detector? Use the deferal or get a lawyer. Good luck.

3 years to clear seems short; Isn't it 5? Try to avoid raising eyebrows at your insurance provider. Ouch!

Ya I am in the same boat. I got popped for 90 in a 70. Bail amount is 161 and no chance for traffic school as they don't allow it if your going over 80. My insurance company forgives one point. I just need to be good for the next three years.

Interesting. I got popped for 90 in a 70 outside of Barstow, and they did allow the traffic school route. The over 80 thing must be a city/county law, because it's not a state law.

If you don't have a good radar/laser detector, get one. Even
with my passport, I use my eyes and brain in conjunction to
look ahead for those laser cops. Of course you know that
a laser detector only lets you know when you have already
been tagged. You have to be smart when you exceed the normal
speeding limit.

Re: Help - Got a huge speeding ticket!

It really depends on the "understanding" in your state. In NJ, with a clean record (and provided you were not combative with the cop), you can show up to the court appearance and the cop will agree to drop you to a lower point hit on your license in return for paying the fine.

This applies more to state cops VS. local cops. Some locals will not budge.

Re: Help - Got a huge speeding ticket!

state patrol pulled me over once on the way to Canada, I was going 90 in a 70. I showed him my brochure about how the sedan had very little drag and I also had my Motor Trend where they said the sedan was one of the quietest they'd ever driven. I guess because there was no one else around me, and I haven't had a ticket in 6 yrs, he let me go. That was pretty cool.

The other time I was at Lake Chelan and got a 35 in 25. I drove all the way back to contest it 2 months later and the judge was "you drove 4 hours from Seattle to here just to contest a $60 ticket? Ok, dismissed."

Wow, an intelligent, informative discussion, on-topic, and related to someone getting a speeding ticket. No "I hate cops", or "this country suXXors!!!!1!!one" responses at all (yet).

Well done sedan owners. Come over to the coupe forum once in a while and teach us a thing or two.

Re: Help - Got a huge speeding ticket!

Are you in the Seattle, King County area?

If so, do I just mitigate and ask for the traffic school route?

Re: Help - Got a huge speeding ticket!

From my experience (and from pretty much every one of my friends' experience), in NJ you get 2 points dropped if you show up in court. That means if you have a 2 point ticket you'll get charged with a no point violation, and if you have a 4 point one you get dropped to 2 points. Of course you need to have at least a semi-decent driving record. Personally, I didn't even face the cop in court, I dealt only with the prosecutor. YMMV, but there's a better chance that you WILL get two points off rather than you WON"T.
