G wins C&D comparo!

They had the BMW 325, Audi A4, SAAB Aero, Jaguar, Acura and one more.
The G came on top with the 325 2nd. The TL was the quickest? but had handling problems and torque steer.
My surprise was that
0-60
TL: 5.9 sec
G35: 6.5 sec
1/4 mile
TL: 14.4 at 99 mph
G35: 14.6 at 99 mph
I thought the 6 speed G could do like 5.9 (0-6) and 14.2 (1/4 mile)
In anothet comparison by Motor Trend the 04 Maxima, 6 speed came within 0.2 sec of the TL in 0-60 and within 0.3 sec on the 1/4.
What's going on?

Re: G wins C&D comparo!

Those numbers had to be fixed, the 04 max is a boat. The power is posts has to be false too because it uses the same intake manifold as the 02/03's and altima. that manifold is of variable capasity and is very differect from the G, Z, and FX manifolds. It makes more tq in the low end, but comes up short on both hp and tq later. The TL could very well be faster than the G in the strait line, but i think thoe numbers were a bit off too.

I seriously doubt those numbers. 5.9 seconds for TL seems kind of too fast, while 6.5seconds should be the number for a 5AT G35 sedan instead of 6MT.

The driver of the test car probably didn't maximize shift points and clutch release.

Even 6.5 sounds high for AT G35. Motortrend clocks in at at 6.3 or 6.2.

I think the numbers quoted above where transribed incorrectly (slightly). The 0-60s where: TL - 5.8, G - 6.3, The quarters where 14.5 vs 14.6 respectively (both at 99). But the G was quicker in 0-100, 0-120 (by almost 1.5 seconds) and top speed. The cars are essentially very close in a straight line, as you'd expect. The main difference is in the chassis.

Re: G wins C&D comparo!

According to the pic of the G's odo, looks like it had over 10K miles. Could have been that the tester has already been put away wet several times by the press corp. Honestly, seemed like most of the other rides in the test were awfully slow compared to past comparos. The IS300 shouldn't be mid-15's with a stick.

I don't think the tests were "doctored"...I think you are just looking at different test conditions...surface, weather, etc. Those kinds of variations are normal.

Can you scan and post the article? It's not on the C&D website yet and many of us don't subscribe to C&D.
Thanks

Re: G wins C&D comparo!

Automobile in their Sport Sedan shootout had the G35 6MT doing 0-60 in 5.6 seconds (same as the Mitsubishi Evo !!) in October 2003. In the same test, I think they got the Maxima SE at 6.1 seconds, matching the Subaru WRX. The Acura TSX and BMW 325i finished ahead of the G35 despite much slower times (around 8 seconds) in that comparo!!
I think there is something wrong if the G35 is much slower than the TL, and slower than the Maxima. Too much wheelspin at launch, perhaps.

Or, maybe they had VSC on and it slowed them down when barking the tires shifing into second gear.??
