transmission question (5AT)

I notice that when I first start up my 03 in the morning it seems like when I put my shifter in "D" it hesitates or takes a second before it goes in gear. Was thinking to get the transmission flushed ??

It is otherwise perfect - any thoughts ?

Oh yeah is there a way to make the auto tranny shift faster ? Shift plate / kit ?

Valve body mod will allow the actual shift to be faster/firmer. But it won't affect the actual shift point (ie.. when it shifts).

Don't get the Stillen VB. It totally blasted my tranny then Stillen said it wasn't their fault. Then they paid 30% of the repair bill. VB upgrade will definitely do what you want - just be careful to get a good one.

I don't know about these other guys but from what I know, also my buddy is a nissan tech, the 5AT transmission is as close to bulletproof as you can get. They use the same tranny is several of the nissan models. I wouldn't screw with it at all. Maybe a grounding kit would help but other than that it's a pretty damn good auto transmission, probably one of the best out there. I haven't heard much complaining about it getting jacked up like the 6mt. Back me up somebody

I'd have to disagree... my new VB and TC is bomb-diggity. At WOT it'll step a little to the left with a solid chirp into 2nd, and can even chirp into 3rd if I am not careful

And no, this ain't no Stillen VB

Transgo Performance (edit: removed p/n as Transgo is not in prod yet) VB/Shift Kit - 250 line pressure (oem 205) maintains line pressure thru the shift with a valve within a valve to overide the op pressure so the solenoid can't override the higher PSI.

Clutch pack has Nissan Titan pistons (smaller) to accomadate +2 clutch plates on gears 1 & 2, +1 on gears 3 & 4. Not sure if they did anything with the bands, but I am sure they cleaned them up.

Edge Racing Torque Converter - Street Edge series with a 2800 stall, flash brazed

IT'S A FREAKIN MONSTER NOW!!!!

as for the early morning.. it goes away when the fluid warms up. No big thing. Did it with my old trans and the new one, although maybe a little harder with the new one.

Nice SoCalTed! Did you do all of these at once? Can you specify how much each mod cost?

I figured there was nothing wrong with my tranny just wanted to be sure it was going to crap out or anything ? When should we change / flush the 5AT ?

I wouldn't flush the trans. On my oem one, I would just change the fluid every 12 to 15k. It doesn't hurt to add a tranny cooler too

You can call protrans for the pricing, as well as edge. I think DaveO also had the edge TC.

Total package was about 4k+... Then there was the install which was around $1200 (GT motorsports), and included an 11"x11" B&M tranny cooler plus braided hose

After my Stillen VB upgrade, the delay when you first start the car to get the fluid pressure up in the tranny has become a little longer. This is really not a problem. The car does need to warm up a bit before all systems are stable. After 30 seconds everything is fine. Everything in my transmission is new and fluid levels are correct. This is just how it works.

I guess he doesn't like it, or suggest it.
