Re: What would you change about the G35 Sedan?

I personally wouldn't touch the sedan except the interior dash.

1. The engine has so much potential as it is. Just add good quality mods.
2. If power and torque was upgraded to 300/300 the car would be more expensive in M class range.
2. It less expensive to upgrade to better springs, light rims/sticky tires then to purchase the manufactury upgraded package if offered. Also you have a plenty of choice.

Of course by modifying the car you'll kiss your warranty good bye, however Im type of people who would like more and want to be unique.

Re: What would you change about the G35 Sedan?

1) Brembros on 6mt
2) Dual exhaust, like the coupes.
3) 18" staggered wheels. 225 front, 245 rear
4) Projector style headlights
5) No 2 toned trim, all SINGLE body color.
6) Blue lighting behind the gauges and climate control.
7) 6mt AWD
8) Leather Wraped Recaro Seats
9) Better LSD
10) 300hp and 300 ft.lbs torque
11) Much cheaper Nismo kit
12) standard double din style radio
13) hid low beams
14) body color matched headlights (like on ferrari's)
15) lower the massive sedan wheel gap.
16) lose the chrome handels
17) angel Eyes
18) maybe offer a guage package
19) stiffer springs
20) better quality speakers

I would also like to see a better aftermarket support.

I hope Infiniti sees this thread...

1. More attention to fit and finish
2. Re-design the seat so controls are not under your a$$
3. More padding on the arm rest
4. Improved response of manu-matic (like the FX)
5. 225 or 235 tires as standard

one of those little flower holders like what is in the VW beetle. heh, kidding.

i also like ryo's idea of real manual mode for 5AT. HID lows would be nice. a better sounding audio system would be even nicer. and maybe even a not-so-bulky keyfob/key.

Re: What would you change about the G35 Sedan?

WOW! I have to admit to being surprised at the HUGE response to this topic. I guess I touched a bit of a nerve...

Anyway, if I have read this correctly, the improvements basically break down to the following:

1. Horsepower/torque: It seems like 300/300 (hp/torque) is the most desired (should be pretty easily doable with the naturally aspirated VQ, while retaining warranty and CARB compliance). I would think that the requests for intake/exhaust mods fall into this category (with the exception of those who like a sportier sound)?

2. Better handling setup: This seems primarily focused around tires/wheels, though stiffer springs have been mentioned. One thing I don't understand though is the request for staggered wheels/tires.

From my experience with the 5AT (non-sport) sedan, the car seems very well balanced, with just a bit of understeer. Even at the limit, I don't experience oversteer unless I make some really abrupt accellerator "adjustments".

My experience with the Goodyear RSA's (during test drives) is that they tend to show very abrupt changes from traction to NO traction, with little in between. The Brigdestone EL42's are much more progressive, just squealing louder rather than releasing grip (MUCH more preferable, IMO), though they may have slightly less at-the-limit grip. Perhaps the problem with oversteer that some are experiencing are more tire than size of tire related?

Not to mention the fact that same sized tires (even if directionals were put on) would at least allow some tire rotation for extended tire life. I guess we need to keep in mind that a significant percentage (majority) prefer all-season tires that handle well, provide a relatively smooth ride, and fair tire life.

Personally, I would prefer some better tires, especially at the prices the current OEM sedan tires are going for. Both the RSA's and EL42's are $150-165 a tire now from Tirerack.com now, up $40-50 from two years ago. They are comparably priced to the Goodyear F1 GS-D3 and Bridgestone S-03's now (225/55-17). I'm expecting my Goodyears tomorrow.

I would also like to see some thicker anti-roll bars. There is a bit too much body roll for my taste in this type of car. I think that roll bars are a better overall solution for this than springs as they will not affect everyday driving as much (ride firmness).

3. Transmission changes (shift points/hardness of shifts, 6MT AWD, and manumatic actually being "manual"): The first seems to be centered around what could be called a "sport" mode. The last seems to reflect how the "manual" mode is basically worthless for the purpose DRIVERS think it is for.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the gearing in both the rear end and for each gear. For one, I think that the fifth gear (in the AT) is not an overdrive and should be made much "taller", reducing the engine RPM at speed (70-75mph). A better matching of gearing to engine power profile would make for a significantly quicker car, dropping the 5AT 0-60 times to under 6 seconds, I'm sure.

And, of course, the lack of LSD availability on the sedan and the desire for something better than the viscous LSD that is available in the coupe. Of course, all LSD's have their shortcomings...

4. Brakes: At least Infiniti has addressed the brake life issue by warrantying the brakes for 36K (I just had mine replaced at 30K miles with 1mm left on the front pads). Brake dust is also, IMO, a big problem, which is the reason why I put ceramic pads on the front at my cost. I still do not understand how the stock pads/rotors stop shorter than the Brembo's, but it is hard to argue with success. Guess the Brembo's help with brake fade under heavy use.

The Brembo's should be an option on ANY of the sedans, at the very least an option for all sport models (5AT or 6MT).

5. Seats: This one seems to be a common one. IMO, the front seats in the sedan are seriously lacking in side bolsters, a significant oversight for a sport sedan. Having power lumbar (with greater adjustment) would be a nice addition.

Then there is the issue of the control placement. The only people who seem to like it are those who don't sit/rub on them, have things in their pockets that "adjust" these controls, and/or don't spill a drink into them. I would prefer the controls to either be (1) on the console or (2) between the door and seat.

I would also like to see some additional head room. I'm only 6' tall and, with the sunroof, I'm hitting my head on the headliner unless I lean over/tilt my head. Then again, I prefer a more verticle driving position for improved visibility as opposed to the recliner position.

Finally, there are those who are stuck with the different seats from the 6MT that don't have as many adjustments. That is something I truly do not understand.

Then there is the strange behavior of the seat memory (IMO illogically, does not include mirror memory,) that will revert back to an earlier setting if the key is not inserted within a certain amount of time (something that has resulted in many a smashed knee since my wife is 5'2" and I am 6').

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the lack of 60/40 split fold-down seats in the rear in addition to the existing recline.

6. Wheels: I would like to see a wider variety of wheels available. At the very least, anything that is available on the coupe should be available for the sedan.

7. Steering: While the turning circle on the sedan is fairly tight, I would still like to see it be even tighter (say around 32' as opposed to the current 36'). It would make it more nimble and much easier to park.

8. Headlights: HID all the way around rather than just on the low beams seems to be the concensus. At the very least, Infiniti could have spec'd super white halogen bulbs.

9. Interior dash/trim: This has been a real let-down for me. The black plastic scuffs VERY easily and soon looks like $#!T. Worst durability in an interior material of any vehicle I may have EVER owned (includes a '68 Merc Monteray, '74 VW Bug, '78 VW Scirocco, '84 Chevy Celebrity, '86 Audi 5000, '95 and '96 Chrysler Sebrings). They really need to look at just about anyone else's interiors to see how to improve this. Dark wood in graphite and light in willow interiors would be nice...

10. I'd also like to add improved wind noise. It is a bit high for a car with the aerodynamics this car has.

11. Another addition I'd like to make is to DRAMATICALLY increase the navigation system's map coverage. It is just not good enough. I can buy from Delorme a 10 CD (6.4GB) set that includes every street in the US and over 4 million points of interest for ~$50. I cannot see why that wouldn't fit onto a dual-layer DVD (8.7GB). Especially at the $2K Infiniti is charging. The latest update is minor at best and just not worth the $180 they want for it.

Anyway, the response has been great and I hope others will add to the growing list. Then if we can only get Infiniti/Nismo/other aftermarket to listen...

Scott

PS. ctxca - I really liked your suggestions and I'll see if I can get the Cylons, Speed, Charlie (The Santa Clause), the Duke's, and Dr. Brown to help me with them...
Edited by stsurbrook on 02/25/04 10:19 PM.

Re: What would you change about the G35 Sedan?

Awesome car - but all the more reason some of these things amaze me.
More of the coupe styling please
More tire please
Horrible stereo - my 96 Maxima Bose was great
Memory seats are a joke
Some switch placement seem an afterthought
Titanium plastic from the first boom box I bought with my paper route money in 1978.
Nothing to grab to open my trunk (03)
Brakes very difficult to modulate
Oldsmobile door handles
Nobody can explain why in cold weather I have a very strong burning rubber smell

Re: What would you change about the G35 Sedan?

Fix the fresh air ducting that allows too much air from the engine compartment.
Present system heats the ambient air 10+ degrees, and brings in fumes.

6MT shifting could be smoother.

A little less wind noise.

Less brake dust from the front calipers (if possible without reducing performance).

Better fuel mileage. Could be done without a performance hit by improving fuel metering.

Re: What would you change about the G35 Sedan?

geeitup,

I agree about the memory seats. They are definitely not as useful as they could be. And not including memory for the mirrors seems almost brain dead. I spend at least as much time adjusting mirrors as I do the seat (actually MORE time since I have a one button setting for the seats now...).

C5Tor,

G45? I don't know. That engine is EXPENSIVE and HEAVY. Would dramatically change the weight ratios. Personally, I think that FI would be a better option, make about the same power, and weigh less.

Re: What would you change about the G35 Sedan?

All the above for the 5AT +

I would like for the remote to unlock the door, as well as reset the seat position. The wife drives the car, I get in and start it up and zoom....into her mini-me position ! ! ! !

The NAV needs to display the clock in all modes....since the pop-up navi blocks the analog clock, and the NAV only shows the time when in map mode.

5AT - steering wheel paddles for up & down shifting. Hey, just give us the 8CVT

Brembos on the 5AT when purchased with Sport.

Optional racing cams

Optional TT (have you noticed te Service manual gives tips on oil for the Turbo on your G, if you have it installed !!??)

Optional tower strut.

Optional rechargeable 3-shot chemical lasers for idiots on the freeways.

Cheers, ted

This option would make the G totally unavailable, they'd sell as soon as they came off the boat, wouldn't need any dealers!

I'd add "passenger side bimbo" as a standard feature.
