Bloody TL driver couldn't handle his car
My wife and I were leaving the movie theatre tonight (Starsky & Hutch, very good film) and because we'd met there earlier I walked my wife too her car then headed too mine. There's a really nice looking dark blue TL parked next too my G and the owner is just about too get in, so I said "How do you like your car?" and he pretty much ignored me. I get in mine, pull out of the parking lot and stop to turn left and this bloke is right behind me. I turn left onto a two lane road, light is red and the TL driver is in the left lane next too me. He wasn't looking at me, but was revving his engine, light turns green and I swear too God, his car shot forward and into my lane, I hadn't even taken off at this point, but could see the bloke trying too correct the torque steer and frantically pulling his car back into his lane. So I pull forward and there's another red light about 400 yds down the way. So me and the TL driver are in the two lanes, he's refusing too look at me, and I'm laughing too myself and lo & behold the light turns green, he floored it again and his car pulled violentley too the right, I cruised past, opened my window and shouted the words"Nice car, what wheel drive is that?"
Re: Bloody TL driver couldn't handle his car
Hahahahaha! LMAO! When I test drove the TL I hated that torque steering with FWD or is it FUWD? Good one. There are some strange people out there...

They say "Wit is the salt of conversation." Nice reply to TL driver. I'd say you handled that quite well old chap.

And some people still think FWD is safer than RWD! Perhaps it is in a low powered car but putting 270hp to the wrong wheels is just crazy. Heck I would rather have a good RWD car with snow tires and VSC than a FWD car on all-seasons.
I drove the TL before getting my G and noticed the torque steer immediately when I hammered it (yet Consumer Reports say there is none!). Honda needs to move to RWD/AWD or to start steering with the rear wheels ASAP.

I had a similar situation. First time I had a I35 loaner. I floored that sucker out of a corner to see what it could do. Completely caught me off guard and scared the crap out of me. AWD or RWD for me thank you.

Re: Bloody TL driver couldn't handle his car
that is one reason I got rid of the altima, 240 can be handled from a torque steer view but just really sucks for traction.

Acura's engineers are quite aware of the differences, but the majority of their target market wants FWD (or they want the extra interior and trunk space from not having a driveshaft).
Blame the American public, where 97% of car buyers prefer automatic tranmissions.

I applaud you for not falling into the TL guys behavior. I have had a few run-ins with the new Honda Accords for some reason. Maybe with all the accolades the G has received we drive around with a target on our cars.
Re: Bloody TL driver couldn't handle his car
When I test-drove the TL, I actually found it remarkably free of torque steer, at least on a straght line. Much better than most FWD cars, especially the VQ powered Nissans. It becomes quite apparent in corners though, especially with heavy applications of throttle. I think that if I were to get a FWD vehicle today (which I wouldn't), it would be one of the Acuras.

Re: Bloody TL driver couldn't handle his car
Certainly the enthusiasm with which one launches the car and with VDC on/off makes a difference. I would bet that if you light the tires on it you'll pull right about a dance step or two..
Re: Bloody TL driver couldn't handle his car
I noticed the torque steer (C& D calls it 'steering pollution') whilst accelerating hard from a standstill and then going into a sharp curve whilst still accelerating. In a straight line with traction on it was barely noticable (but the car moved off the line fairly slowly - this was an automatic by the way).
Apart from the NSX the only other Honda/Acura out there out of dozens of models worldwide is the S2000 (apart from racing cars of course). Even their 4WD vehicles like the Pilot and MDX are FWD with occasional use of the rear wheels. Honda knows the benefit of RWD, are capable of building brilliant RWD vehicles, but choose not to do so because there is less money in it (for now). I agree their FWD vehicles are about the best out there, but even companies like GM (Cadillac, some Pontiacs) and Chrysler (upcoming cars) are moving back to RWD for better driving enjoyment.

Re: Bloody TL driver couldn't handle his car
I have a coupe ordered for June delivery, but right now I'm driving a Volvo S60 T5... it's FWD and (volvo claims) 247hp.... the thing goes like hell (for a volvo) but seriously has the WORST torque steer i've ever experienced
if i really hammer it from a stoplight, i've gotta hold onto the wheel tight to keep from hitting either a curb or the driver next to me... i can totally see the situation BritshBloke described happening with more than 20hp more than my car being put to the front wheels
2004 CB G35 Coupe 5AT - on order, due in June
