If you don't have snow tires and are planning on climbing any sort of hill forget it. Drive the altima; even then you should use snowtires.
On a side note, it's been snowing buckets here in Ottawa and I have snow tired on my 6MT; the more the merrier! drift. every. corner.
but seriously; sounds like its an uphill drive and you will not be able to do it if the roads are snow-covered.

2. Keep your following distances FAR! ESP with bad tires. Your gonna slide a lot.
3. Go slowly around turns. Your car IS going to slide.
4. Keep the speeds lower.
5. Seeing as you've never driven in snow before, find a parking lot and practice. Just try sliding, turning and stopping and get a feel for how your car handles the snow.
6. NO JERKY MOVEMENTS! When your driving down a snowy highway, you want to keep as STEADY as possible. No jerky movements or you might end up going sideways into the median.
If you heed my list, you will do just fine in the snow.

OP, you are just asking for trouble by taking the G.

I went to Big Bear bout 3 weeks ago when it started snowing. Stopped by autozone to pick up some snow chains for my girls '07 Maxima. Chains are a must, def. at this weather there right now. Luckily for me, it started snowing the moment I got there so I didn't need the chains climbing the mountain. Had about a good 3-4 inches of snow that night. Almost died in my friends TC going to the market on a hill the next day... anyways, there should be a stop on the way up to put on chains and also on the way down if its still snowing. I had to have them on while going down. Just take it easy while driving bro, and seriously, leave A LOT of space in betweens cars. I saw literally over 10 cars sliding around, falling into ditches, plowing thick snow 'cuz they lost control. Big Bears does a great job cleaning up the roads, its usually the ice you need the chains for. Have fun and be safe!

Wow, no driving experience in the snow and if you're taking your rwd G on stock tires... I'll pray for you. Even your altima will have some problems, take it SLOW. Accidents happen when you start to think "hmm, this isn't so bad" and speed up bit by bit then when you need to stop you can't. GL

I'm from NE so trust me I know what this is like, honestly if your only visiting a few days, a few bags of sand in the trunk makes a huge difference. Oh and if you get really stuck somewhere, do not be afraid to shut the VDC off and let her rip. You'll lose some tread doing this but it gets you moving.

Advice from a Canadian---G's don't like snow
I gotta tell ya that G's aren't big fans of the snow. Take it from me--I live in Toronto, Canada where the snow is always falling---sometimes as late as mid-April.....
I've got a set of snows on my '05 M6 and thank the heavens that the car came equipped with the VDM! I guess if you take it easy enough and feather the throttle you might be okay----but like the guys are saying--save yourself the headache and money in potential accident repairs and rent a 4x4

Altima and some chains and you will be fine.
-keep it in a high gear while moving forward...
-try not to use brakes
-down hill assist by shifting to a lower gear instead of breaking to keep your vehicle at a slow pace.
-keep lots of distance between you an everyone else.
oh, and most importantly... find a open parking lot and do some cookies with some occasional e-brake pulls!! Have fun
