My car did the same thing (04x) - I couldn't even get the hood open - it just happened from inbetween one oil change to the next. My mechanic and I were pushing down on the edge of the fenders, just to get the hood open. Finally got it opened and tried to figure out, WTF? Those sounds of grinding metal is stomach churning............

He sprayed the crap out of it with White Lithium Grease, and once it started to move freely, it woudln't sit flush - so we took washers and used them as a spacer to level it out a little bit more, but its not 100 percent, but its close.

He asked his son who works for Infiniti, and he said it was directly related to not greasing the hinges on a regular basis (with oil changes). This happened last year about this time, and since then, I haven't had any problems with it. I think Ive had 3 oil changes since, and each time he sprays lube up there to the hinges.

so anyone who doesn't go to the dealer to get your oil changes done, either tell your mechanic to lube the hinges, or buy your own can and do it yourself each time you get an oil change, fill up your washer fluid, whatever.

 

At first I thought you were talking about pneumatic shocks under the hood...but your're just talking about hinges, is that what we're talking about........hinges?

I'm not sure if the dealer has been lubbing them, but I will mention on my next oilchange.

 

Silicone lube is good enough? And the actually hinge seems pretty simplistic...I'm suprised after looking at it that it can seize.

 

I just had this problem. Got an oil check and went to look at the engine when i got home to see how clean the engine was and i heard metal on metal and the hood wouldn't open very well. Took it to the dealership and they said they'd replace it under warranty. They even gave me a brand new 08G35x, and i'm trying to come up with more excuses to hold on to it haha.

 

Thats funny I saw this post I just started to lubricate mine because they were sticking, but it was too late I already have alittle chip on the hood that needs to be touched. =/

 

It's not dealer BS....these hinges do need some TLC. I noticed my drivers side hing was sticking a while back (about 1-1/2 years ago) and the arm was bending...reason I noticed is when I put my hood up, the corner of the hood closest to the drivers side was hitting the side fender when all the way up and I had a small paint chip . I took a can of WD-40 and sprayed it that one time and the problem has not come back.

Bottom line - no need for a dealer to change your oil and no need to buy any special white lithium grease!

 

I'd go with the spray with the 'straw' nozzle so you can get the good stuff right in there.

jimmy, I have to agree with dudefish on this one, get the white lithium grease, it's very common, not that much more expensive (maybe 6-8 bucks), and the right product for the job; WD40 is a penetrating oil for loosening things up, WLG is an actual lubricant. I think it's even made by the same company.

 

Good enough. I had some WD-40 handy, so that's why I used it. WD-40 is also used as a lubricant too.

wtf.omg there more to it then the oil change..i guess i better buy a can so i don't get that problem..i always open my hood and never have lubed it .i always do my own oil change..iI have owned my 04 sedan for 3 years now.I better start than something happens.good thing I looked here..

 

This problem just started for me as well, about 2-3 weeks ago. I did notice over the last few months the hood had more resistance to open it up to full-open, but never thought anything off it.

It got really bad 2 weeks ago when I went to replace my suspension, and when I put the hood all the way up, I heard the metal-on-metal scrape as the hood scratched up my fender

I talked to my Infiniti dealer about it, and the car is going in today for replacement hinges.

The hood is very light for an OEM hood, and I imagine that they put in hinges that aren't as heavy-duty as on other cars that have heavier hoods. This is probably why they start bending when not regularly lubricated. Effing stupid.
