Painting sills , front& rear bumpers?

Hi all,
Was just wondering if anyone had painted the black sills, front & rear bumpers on their sedan? I have an 04 D/G sedan and was considering the 3 piece aero kit, but thought maybe this would be a cheaper alternative?
My concerns would be chipping & flaking, cost and any guarantees the paint job would last? Any info or pics would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Andrew.

Check out the Rides section for some pics of Sedans with the painted sills. Ive seen a few in there before.

Im also interested in knowing about chipping & flaking, cost and any guarantees the paint job would last?...etc...etc.

Anyone? Anyone?

Re: Painting sills , front& rear bumpers?

I just went and got an estimate last week..The autobody shop advised me it would cost $450 - 500 dollars....and said that the back bumper (sill) would look a little off because it was made of plastic but shouldn't be that noticable. He advised me that it wouldn't chip / flake, and guarantees all his work.
Just make sure that you get something in writing, that shows work is guaranteed.

So I think im going to go through with it...I cant be dishing out $1500 for new areo kit on a lease...

Yea dishing out 1500$ is stupid if your leasing your car unless your buying the G out. Another stupid thing would be painting your stock bumpers and side sills on a leased car!! It would look nice but what happens when you bring it back? I do engine mods cause they can easily be reversed but painting and stuff is a big job. iLLG

Wat'ssss Realllyyyy Goooodddd!!!!!

"Another stupid thing would be painting your stock bumpers and side sills on a leased car!!"

Dealerships are full of morons. They wouldn't even notice.

The bodyshop I took it too gave about the same price, $500-ish, but said they couldn't guarantee it. Due to the type of plastic those black skirts are made of, they said that in a few years it would start to peel off.

Re: Painting sills , front& rear bumpers?

Never had a problem in the past...its just like tinting your windows, they dont care about it, especially if it makes the car look better, and keep in mind that they also want your business again...I know they usually inspect the car a month before the lease is up, if they need me to change them back, im sure someone here wouldnt mind swapping their's in for a painted set...

Im going to go shopping this weekend and see what other prices i get and to double check about the chipping and flaking...keep you guys posted.

Look on in the west forum at the thread on the 3/13 meet Pics, I am on page 6 or 7. I just had mine painted. No issues. Alot of folks think I have the kit. It only ran me $461.00. They did remove the bumpers and side sills.

Re: Painting sills , front& rear bumpers?

Dazzo,

My car is leased too, I don't care about investing 400 bucks over the course of a 36 month lease and i cannot imagine the dealership ever noticing anything different on the car. My concerns would be the flaking , chipping thing? I'm making some inquiries into a great place that repaired my last car and I'll keep all posted. IQ9, thanks for the info also..

Cheers all,

Andy.

Re: Painting sills , front& rear bumpers?

Hey all, quick thing. I just spoke too a mate of mine who got his sills, front & rear bumper painted on a 2003 Passat. It might be like Ryoken said, the paint shop wouldn't guarantee the work because of the plastic composite they painted on? I'll make a few more inquiries next week, thanks too ryoken & G35 papa and all for the quick response. I plan on solving this problem..Lol..

Cheers,

Andrew.

Re: Painting sills , front& rear bumpers?

Any paint shop that won't guarantee the work should be avoided and is simply full of it. If they know what they are doing, the paint won't chip or flake off.

In my opinion, this is just the body shop admitting its incompetence.

I'm going to get my lowers painted soon and expect a guarantee against flaking and peeling.

I've had it done on past cars with plastic lower sills, and NEVER had an issue.

Re: Painting sills , front& rear bumpers?

My shop said its no problem and their lifetime war. will be enforce. I have had NO ISSUES at all. Chipping, cracking or flaking don't even look like the will ever be a problem. Get it done it really helps the look of the car.

I got mine painted here through a friend... Amazing change in the look of the car. It looks sooo much better - its not even funny. the paint has been sticking just fine, except for one small spot on the rear skirt. Otherwise, this is the best mod you can do for very little investment.

I fully agree. This is one of the best mods for the sedan. Power wise it does nothing but it makes the car look finished.

Click my name and you'll see my pix. If your body shop says they can't do it or that there will be problems, your body shop is not a very good one. Paid around $500 for mine. Had it for a year now and no chips.
