3rd gear pulls on auto?

I have a 2003 auto, and 3rd gear seems to be a beast compared to the others. If I am accelerating from a dead stop giving a constant amount of gas.....1st and 2nd are normal....then when it hits 3rd there is just a surge of power in comparison. Anyone else experience this?

maybe I wasn't clear. There is a lot of power in third gear when I am just driving normal, without using the manu-matic. 1st & 2nd accelerate normally, and without giving more gas third gear starts off like a monster.

this is that swell of power infiniti says the g commands. ha. I really think it's just that the 5AT has pretty close gear ratios so it basically keeps you in the power band more than say a Camry or accord,

the reason is when u shift to 3rd at slower speeds tq curve increases from 3500 - 4500 rpm and the it starts dropping. The fact is ur car does not accelerate faster it is just a "feeling" that it gives.

I thought that was pretty good in second when I was N/A, now that I am FI, when third kicks in when accelerating easy and the boost comes on at the same time; most people think I'm hitting the gas, but it's just the car.

I know what you are talking about with that 3rd gear pulling thing. I always have felt it. It seems to accelerate harder right when it switches to 3rd, whereas, 1st and 2nd seems to "lag" when compared to 3rd gear.

I know exactly what you're talking about and it annoys the hell out of me because it's very clear to me that the Nissan nanny's are dumbing down the power and reponse at part-throttle in 1st and 2nd gear. When you accelerate from a light with a 5AT at part-throttle, the other cars hang with you in 1st and 2nd, and then when you hit 3rd start running away even though you haven't changed the throttle input.

I especially dislike the flat spot in the middle of first gear at full throttle. 2004 G35x.

it's pretty normal i'd say, 1&2 are pretty short gears, so you don't stay in them very long, 3rd is the first long gear, so while you won't be putting as much torque to the road as with 1st&2nd, you'll be pulling longer, also given the reduced torque, the vdc won't be cutting in as much.
most cars have a "magic" gear where the car feels the fastest, my last car it was 2nd, out of 4, first wasn't bad, since it was fairly tall, 90kph top, 2nd was good till about 130kph, and would pull from a stop, third would get you to the limiter, and 4th wouldn't engage at wot. 2nd was probably the best in my old accord.
it all comes down to how effectively you can get the engine torque to the road, and why in most cars you can lock it into 2nd for winter driving to cut the torque to the road to reduce wheel spin, (side note, how do you do this in our cars (top gear selector rather than true manumatic)?)

pardon the verbosity,

Yeah, i have always noticed this as well and never really thought much of it. It's so true though. Other cars keep up in first and second then when third comes you walk like 2 cars in a second.
