Impressions of the HKS exhaust

Now that I'v hade the HKS exhaust for a few runs, here are
my impressions:
1) Definitely more HP to be felt throughout the power band
2) Less Stillen CAI/Ztube howl at WOT, but alot more exhaust
music. This is pretty interesting: before the HKS install,
the intake combo was all that was to be heard on WOT.
And it sounded really loud and agressive. Now.....
the intake/combo doesn't really scream, but more like
accompanies the exhaust. Like now the system is
complete and actually breathing properly. Without the
exhaust, the intake was having to "gulp" more air than
it could pass and became "constapated". With the
exhaust, (exlax), the engine is breathing so
easily that it doesn't "howl" in constipation. HeHe

Re: Impressions of the HKS exhaust

For some reason the board would let me post the first pic
of the stock muffler. When I tried to add pics of the HKS,
every replied failed to show the pic. So I was able to add the
pics of the HKS to MyG35. Click on "cato", then click on
"2003 Sedan" to view the pics of the HKS installed.

Re: Impressions of the HKS exhaust

No, no ricer sound at all. I was shocked when I first started
the car with the installed HKS. I didn't notice it at all.
Only on acceleration does it start chiming in. It is very
adult sounding. Almost too quiet. But on acceleration,
my G35 says "GET THE HELL OUTTA MY WAY!"

Re: Impressions of the HKS exhaust

I bought the HKS rear section from mbarrad, who is selling
his G35 and all of it's mods. I checked the HKS website,
they are currently selling this exhasut for $525. Needless
to say, Mike sold it to me for much less. I will try to post a
pic of it now.

Re: Impressions of the HKS exhaust

u are only changing the sound of your exhuast? Adding the rear section does not increase HP maybe 1-3. doing a catback system with larger pipeing a better bends that really allows the exhaust to flow freely. U still have the stock Y-pipe and the suitcase in the middle.

Re: Impressions of the HKS exhaust

HKS dynos an increase in HP and torque with this rear
section exhaust. While it does not produce the numbers like
a full cat-back does, it does in fact increase. Coupled with my
intake upgrades, real HP/TQ are to be had and felt. This
is a poor man's exhaust. For $250, I was able to compliment
my intake very nicely. Thank you very much!

Re: Impressions of the HKS exhaust

Is that the coupe midpipe? If so, how much should I expect
to pay for it? If I add that to my HKS, I think I might be
happier.

Re: Impressions of the HKS exhaust

Dave,

Don't do it. Those pics are from my car and my coupe midpipe install. Trust me you will not be happier, and there are absolutely no power gains at all. The coupe midpipe coupled with the HKS gave off an aweful drone that got old really fast. I have since sold the midpipe and reinstalled the OEM midpipe. Just trying to save you from a bad mistake.

Re: Impressions of the HKS exhaust

Mike,
Thanks for the advice. I was going to ask you about this, but
you beat me to it! I seem to remember someone said that
the sedan premuffler was a straight through design and
was pretty well designed. I guess the only change to be made
for the exhaust would be a better Y pipe?
I thought that garage and those ramps looked familiar!

Re: Impressions of the HKS exhaust

I asked HKS what power gains I should expect with this rear section
exhaust. Here is their response:

Hello sir

The HKS sport exhaust for the G35 will give you between 8-10 hp and about the same in torque. It is a very great system for the G35. I also have greddy exhausts.

Thank you
