Anyone prefer the sleeper look??
Ever since I've been into fettling with cars, I have always gone for the 'stock' look, as best I can. No idea why, but the whole F&F thing never tickled the imagination, and to be honest, I'd much rather people didn't know my car could utterly rape them into next week. So, who else is of this train of thought? My old cars had boost increases, forged internals, water injection, uprated intercoolers, lightened flywheels, etc, yet the only things possible to see on the exterior was a slightly lower stance, and maybe some better, but not silly big wheels, (in fact my tubby had 16 inch wheels, when people were sticking huge futhamuckers on them). Is it just me???
It's not just you, I try my best not to attract attention to me and my car. Why the fvck should I care if average Joe thinks my car looks fast and/or furious? I know what my car can do and I love driving it.
I'm pretty sure the only people who are truly interested in how fast my car looks are:
1. cops
2. burglars/theives
3. haters/vandals
There are a lot of users here that don't see it that way, and many of them seem to figure the price of aftermarket wheels and a body kit into the price of the car from the beginning. If it doesn't make the car go faster, handle better, or stop quicker, I'm not interested (and I'm pretty sure roof spoilers, carbon fiber B-piller overlays, billet aluminum oil caps, front bumper covers with gigantic holes/scoops, Skyline kickplates, clear corners, mesh or billet grilles, smoked tail lights, extra-long purple powder-coated JDM wheel studs, hyper-bright 9,000,000K fog light bulbs, chin spoilers, Nismo shift *****, titanium radiator plates, and carbon fiber engine covers don't do any of those).
A nice looking light-weight set of wheels, maybe... but so expensive, I'd rather use the money towards stuff that really makes a difference performance-wise.
But that's just me.

Yeah... I agree. I'm sure that over time I'll look into superchargers, uprated radiator, induction, exhaust, and all the other usual stuff, but I really don't want to change the outside at all. I remember driving my little race prepped rally car around town, I used to get stopped EVERY time. Can't be fecked with all that nonesense.
You're not the only one. I like sleepers. My favorite style for cars is when only someone who really knows what the car should look like but they can spot the subtle differences. I don't plan to with anything larger than an 18" wheel (unless I get 19" stock wheels) and with a decent drop and proper offsets, it should look good.
I don't think that the G35 sedan lends itself well to body kits, mainly because of the shoulder line from the hood to the trunk. The body slims down the farther you look down and I think that's why the 03-04 Nismo bumper trim looks weird. It gets fat at the bottom again, kinda like cankles on a girl.
OTOH, the coupe pulls it off kits much better, mainly because the rear bumper has that angle that juts out. The fender arches help square it out too.
I always wondered what a G35 sedan would look like if someone went to the trouble of trying to make it look like a coupe rear end. I'll mess around with that in photoshop tomorrow, see how that looks.

you are NOT alone with that thought process. the BEST sleeper i can remember was a Buick Reagal T-type. same engine as the Grand National BUT this particular model came in a "cream" color that REALLY is/was butt ugly BUT line up next to it....

I love sleepers, but I'd never consider any G35 a sleeper unless it looked basically stock on the outside, but ripped off mid to low 12s. That's always been a desire of mine to build the engine, install a quality turbo, and strengthen the auto. It will never happen unless I came into a very large sum of money and I could have another car....which basically means it will never happen.
With my G and with my old Maxima, I went for the clean look. I really like Chip Foose's style because he doesn't dramatically change anything with the body, he just makes little changes which adds up to enormous change. The car is still completely recognizable, but it is greatly improved. That's what I'm going for.
My changes included:
z/coupe springs
Aero bumper
painted sills
blacked out trim
black painted muffler with larger tips
JDM taillights
modded reverse lights
clear corner lights
gold painted calipers
18" rims
removed emblems
tinted

Here is mine, its even got stock chrome wheels (the optional upgraded ones).
I also have a set of stock oem wheels that are painted gloss black.
I consider it fairly clean/stock. I can't go very far down the exterior mods road in Iowa without looking like rice. We have plenty of rice here, and its not in our fields. :P
coupe 19s with 255 in the back so i can put the power down stock 215s weren't enough for putting power down and cornering
nismo body kit makes the car look what its supposed to look like
coilovers/sways are for cornering faster than any stock sedan out in the market.
spl endlinks: My stock endlinks snapped off.
kinetix plenum/exhaust/testpipes/tune = shaved off 0.5-0.7 1/4 mile time and pulling on HR motor with ease and giving E46 M3s run for their money.
Im not sure if my car really is a sleeper. I certainly would like to think so.

For a lot of people customizing their car isn't about looking "Fast and Furious", it's about infusing a bit of your own identity into the car. Making it your own, if you will.
That's why I do exterior modifications. However, they're usually a lower priority than what goes on under the hood. And by no means do I like flashy, over the top modifications (think Kenstyle rear bumper)

I have a similar taste also. Im a big fan of factory parts on cars. With our sedans you can hand pick parts from the coupe and 350z and have great looks without lookin ricey or F and F. I think as mentioned eariler Chip Foose made me fall in love with the idea of making something that everyone thinks is factory. Just getting the proper stance and wheels goes a long way. I think thats why G35Papa appeals so much to me because everything is suttle and clean and thats what I love. I think its not what you have or bought but how you did it. Dont get me wrong sometimes you have to go aftermarket but I perfer that stuff on the inside where its practical, like FI components, suspension, or Double Din HU and technology related stuff. I like the less is more theroy. Just my 2 cents
