high speed driving

Has anyone had any expirence driving their g35 at high speeds for extended periods of time. I am interested in how an unmodified car holds up under these conditions? For example averageing speeds in excess of 100mph for one to two hours or more.

Don't know of anywhere in the US where the cops won't get
you for speeding that long, except a race track. I bet you
would want an oil cooler to drive like that.

Re: high speed driving

I would suggest that the car is fine at 100 or so for extended periods - watch the temps is all. If a passat can do it a G can do it is all i can muster to defend this tho. Our cars are certainly autobahn worthy.

Re: high speed driving

I guess autobahn worthy is a good way to describe it. Everyone seems to be a bit shy to speak of triple digit driving. I for one am acustomed to driving german cars at speed for long periods of time. I wonder if the G can compare

Re: high speed driving

The cop is every lately so never had a chance to test out my G in high speed driving over 120mph but I did try it out on my 94 BMW 530i V8.couple years back. Straight line is pretty much the same to 120mph but lane changing is too scary before my full suspension mod. After the suspension mod/exhaust/ECU chip/Trans Chip/wheel 17"/tire 245f-265r upgrade. It'll get to 156 mph but lane changing at 150mph is still pretty hairy but 120mph is easy as 85mph.

Re: high speed driving

On the way to the grand canyon from Vegas I was in a chain behind a Honda Odyssey and Dodge Caravan going between 100-105 for well over an hour ... was I a driving my G35? No I was driving a 4 banger Toyota Camry.. if that car can do it I am sure a G35 can do it

Re: high speed driving

But I believe the question was: what will it do to our beloved
G35? Sure, we can get up to the limiter speed, but will
prolonged driving it like that hurt?

If you would like to find out for yourself what it feels like to go 100+ MPH for extended periods, you can always run the Silver State Classic. It's 90 miles of flat-out driving. LEGALLY!
Go to www.silverstateclassic.com for details.

Re: high speed driving

Cato: This past weekend, I drove from the Poconos to Ocean City maryland with a friend that has a Licoln LS. For a good hour and a half, we didn't go below 95 and every so often (when he felt tough) we brought it up to over 110 (I have had my G at 135 one for about 2 min but thats it) The car seems fine, except for the amount of heat it pushes out!! You can feel it comming in from the vents even if you have the blower off. So, i do not think driving like that will hurt the car at all!

Re: high speed driving

Bdavis: I'm sure the G35 can run for extended periods of time at 100 MPH+, just based upon the overall top speed available, the aerodynamic attributes of the car, it's generally good overall engineering, and the excellent reputation the VQ engine has as being "bulletproof" (which is why it's one of Ward's "10 Best engines in the world", year after year).

The only real issues for long-term driving at high (100 MPH+) speed should be:

1) Cooling system being able to handle it, or upgraded to do so.
2) Transmission (AT) & engine oil coolers, if you drive like this often, for longer life out of your auto trans. & engine
3) MY OLD PET PEEVE - The final drive ratio is too damned low (numerically high) for this car! We should be able to spin at least 1,000 RPM's less than the 5,500 RPM's indicated when we hit the 145 MPH "wall" that our electronic nanny holds us to in our "G", what with us having 6 GEARS and 260 HP in a 3300 Lb. car !!

Example: In my 1996 Honda Accord EX Sedan with 5MT ("G" Machine was still on order) I went from the San Francisco Bay Area to Dallas, Texas last Christmas, and during one stretch between Arizona and New Mexico, I ran an indicated 105 MPH for 1 hour and 10 minutes on the Interstate, following a Buick Roadmaster with Arizona plates, from approx. 3:00 AM till 4:15 AM (when the Buick left the Interstate). This Accord has 140,000 miles on it, and it was spinning 4,400 RPM in 5th @105 MPH (with a redline of only 6,000 RPM, and only 160 stock ponies in a 3200 LB car with only 5 gears!).

I'm interested in hearing from any "Autobahn" drivers with a US Spec G35, myself. Thanks for the post.

Re: high speed driving

I have no doubt that the G will be absolutely fine at extended high speeds. I drove an old VWJetta GLI in Minnesota at 85+ -- I could not tell the speed as the speedo only went to 85 if memory serves right. I even drove my old Corolla close to 95 for 4-5 hours. The Corolla lasted over 150,000 miles with NO problems. Best of all, there were 5 of us in an rental minivan and drove that flat out going from Grand Canyon SLC, UT.. around 95 or so (it would not go any faster). Well, the brakes caught fire (had smoke coming out) going down Lake Tahoe - and I thought modern brake pads be able to handle it.

Anyhow, if these old 4 cylinder econo-boxes can handle 90+, the G will run at 140 all day long. Ofcourse, unless you at on the Autobahn, you may spend the rest of the year care of the state government.

Re: high speed driving

The G goes above 145, I have consistently taken it up just over 155 (appx 156/157), which is getting pretty close to redline in 6th.

I have made multiple trips (recently in early April) in for extended periods close to 5 hours at between 110 and 120. The g took it like a champ. Gas mileage wasn't as bad as expected either. My engine temps didn't move (I guess is helps with all the air flow too). Last time I changed the oil, it didn't seem thick or really black, but I do have Amsoil synth. I haven't quite got around to the Blinder radar jammer or the valentine radar detector, but I think I am going to pick them up in the next couple of months.

Oh just as a side not, took a high speed turn (on a surface street) with VDC off and gave it a little too much gas and the backend slid out on me, even with my tires. Ended up in the grass and almost hit a speed limit sign sliding for quite a ways, but luckily recovered in time. Good thing the cops weren't around. Funny thing is, that my wife normally says be careful driving when I leave the house, this time, she emphasized it more than usual. I guess I should have listended. Huh, womens intuition.

I know it is really dumb to do this. Try to keep the speeds reasonable. I know I am not your dad, but as you know, speeding is dangerous and does catch up with people, whether its from getting tickets, or worse. Good luck and be safe.

Re: high speed driving

Belerin: Loved your post, that's the kind of "real world" info we need, not theory - but someone who's done it, and tells us how it went.

As far as having the ability to pull redline in 6th, that proves my point about the gearing even more so - with a higher (numerically lower) final drive ratio, the engine could be revving at least 500 RPM's less in top gear, and that would allow for 1MPG gain, at least! Plus, if you space the gears gradually to achieve the final 500 RPM difference, you'd probably be hard pressed to tell any difference in overall acceleration.

Thanks again for the great story/info.
