Chip on my windshield... should I be concerned?!?
Chip on my windshield... should I be concerned?!?
Well.. the dreaded thing happened to me over the weekend. Driving down the street on a sunny SoFla day a rock got picked up by some car in front of me and smacked into my windshield.
Thank god it didn't crack because it hit pretty hard but it did put a small chip in the glass. I checked to make sure it didn't go all the way through and I was lucky it didn't!
Now for the concern, of course my car is brand new (less then 2 months old) and I've got a long time left on my lease. Will the chip get bigger or expand? Is there something I can do to fix it or help protect it without needing to replace my entire windshield? Some special glue or sealer??
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Go into a repair place and have them look at it bro. If it's bad enough and they get it in time, the chip won't spread. And besides they can fill in any slight hole so you won't see it anymore. Cheaper to get a small repair done than to pay your deductible. Good luck bro......

You can have that type of damage repaired as long as it is not in the drivers line of view. I think they can repair damage up to the size of a quarter. Look in your yellow pages under windshield repair.

Get it repaired by a shop that has a lot of experience in this type of repair. Some can do an almost invisible job, leaving a hardly noticeable dot. Others,.
Make sure you don't get any dirty water into the crack or hole before the repair. You can place a square of some adhesive tape over it to keep it clean. Make sure you don't use the types of tape that leave a residue behind. The clear hockey equipment tape works well. I keep a couple of pieces of it in my car for just this purpose.

You are in FL. Windshields are covered by insurance with no deductible. Insurance pays 100%. You can even have the glass repair places come to your home or office to replace it.

I wish I lived in a place where people didn't know what to do when a rock hit their windshield...... its a daily practice here in Colorado

Re: Chip on my windshield... should I be concerned?!?
Sorry for my late response to you all on your advice.
I guess my instinct was correct on what to do. I didn't want to just ignore it as it can certainly get worse. Now the question is, should I just take it back to Infiniti when I go in for my 1k checkup and play dumb pretending I just noticed it and don't know how it got their and have them handle it??
I looked up the winshield repair place you mentioned 2003blue35, but none are located in Florida
I know of some others down South that I can take it too should Infiniti be smart and tell me theirs nothing they can do.
Oh well, no harm in trying Infiniti first.
Thanks again!

That sort of thing won't be covered under warranty. You're better off to get it repaired ASAP if you plan to have it done. Infiniti will probably send it off to someone else and charge you extra.

Re: Chip on my windshield... should I be concerned?!?
Well like JaXG said, living in Florida has its advantages with the insurance covering windshields, except for the increase in your rates. The chip is not that bad that the windshield would have to be replaced but if Infiniti send it off I don't want them charging me an arm and a leg.
Probably best thing to do is see what they say, if they tell me I have to pay for it then I guess I will research on my own and figure out if they're not going to rip me off.
Then again, maybe Infiniti will take care of me since my folks just bought the FX35 from them as well.

Re: Chip on my windshield... should I be concerned
They cant increase your insurance rates for that. Besides, having a cracked windshield is illegal. That is why the insurance has them replaced etc.. If you spend any money to get it fixed, youre just flushing it..

Re: Chip on my windshield... should I be concerned
This is getting way too complicated for a simple issue. If you can't get a recommendation in your area, just look in the phone book under "auto glass". Any place that replaces auto glass should be able to seal the chip for you. Don't even mess with Infiniti- I wouldn't think they'd even have the tools to do it. Anyway, it's a totally simple quick procedure and isn't expensive, even if you did have to pay for it.
Re: Chip on my windshield... should I be concerned
I agree. Locally, it costs $25-$40 CDN. As the NIKE commercial says, 'Just do it!'

Re: Chip on my windshield... should I be concerned
It cost me $50 to fix my chip and my insurance paid for it all. In fact they told me they do it because it's cheaper for them to do it this way. Otherwise a crack will form and the insurance co. is out $700 instead of $50. Even if your deductible is $500, it still costs them $200. So they told me they fix all chips for free and these claims do not affect premiums at all. Else people would be afraid to claim until it cracks.
