STILLEN HI-FLOW AIRBOX vs K&N REPLACEMENT FILTER

I have a quick question and it may be a stupid one but I will ask it anyway. Does the Stillen Hi-Flow Airbox produce more horsepower than the K&N Replacement Air FIlter? Does the Stillen Hi-Flow produce more sound? Have there been any Dynos to compare these two? Any recommendations? I already have the 350Z tube installed and would like ot either do the K&N replacement Filter or the Stillen Hi-FLow. I would assume the Stillen is better but I would appreciate it if somebody could confirm this for me.

My opinion...

1) Yes. (Must allow sufficient time for ECM to adapt.)
2) Increased dbs.
3) G-Tech Comp Pro's runs - Yes.
4) Have R&N dyno results.
Note: System design is essentially the same as JWT Popcharger only the heat shield is significantly better.

Re: STILLEN HI-FLOW AIRBOX vs K&N REPLACEMENT FILTER

Stillen high flow is a stillen heat shield with a coanial K&N fliter, alowing more airflow and better heat protection, which means colder air, all resulting in more horsepower. The Stillen is $186 at everythingg35.com which is about $120 more than a K&N replacement filter, but there is a significant difference as mentioned in the post above.

The one other thing that comes with the Stillen CAI is the machined aluminum ring that helps increase airflow (so they say at Stillen). It does seem to increase HP.

I say don't do either and get the JWT Pop-Charger... ~$120 at Performance Nissan or check our sponsors above... significant difference in sound and throttle responce.

As with the posts before the last. Yes you definitely get a more aggressive sound - and performance on my car - although I haven't dynoed personally, appears to have increased.

Re: STILLEN HI-FLOW AIRBOX vs K&N REPLACEMENT FILTER

Here's an interesting tidbit I found:

This is a quote from "Q45Tech" "Most of the cone filter dyno improvements come from mis calibrating the MAF by changing the vortex flow just in front of it.....making the ecu lean the injectors thinking less air is flowing.

Took years to notice that the MAF voltage actually dropped when you would expect it to rise a tiny bit with more air flow in any from a come filter. The heated air is less dense so you see a MAF voltage drop also. We are speaking of tiny amounts 4.44 vs 4.40-4.36 volts."

An interesting theory. Where does the vortex flow come from?
Are the laws of fluid flow wrong?

so catatafish, what does that mean? the cone filters dont actually do anything? i was thinking that something like that as well, but i dont really know. i have my car chipped, so does that mean i wont see gains with the cone filter?

Re: STILLEN HI-FLOW AIRBOX vs K&N REPLACEMENT FILTER

I think all he is saying is that the reason they work is different than the reason you think they work. He's saying they work because the shape of the filter creates an effect right where the MAF sensor is that makes it think less air is there than really is, thus leaning the mixture, thus making more HP.

This poster, "Q45tech" has pointed out before that the stock air filter on a G35 is so unrestrictive that improving on it by making less restriction is probably not where the gains are coming from given it's very low restriction as it is.

Having your car chipped has nothing to do with it, so long as your chip still delivers less fuel if your MAF senses less air.

Dave O,
I'm not sure how what he's saying violates any physical laws, but I'd love for you to elaborate. I always enjoy a learning opportunity, particularly if it involves input from you and/or Q45tech.
