What is the point to have the variable muffler?
What is the point to have the variable muffler?
Does the variable muffler with one nuzzle open in low rpm makes
1. fuel efficiency?
2. less exhausting noisy?
3. less air polution? (make no sense with same volumn of co)
4. or just a tech gizzmo to lure the buyers?
what is wrong with both nuzzle open all the time? I can not see any benifits with this variable muffler thing.

Re: What is the point to have the variable muffler?
Mainly less noise at low RPM's. Probably a slight low-end torque gain, too, as larger exhausts boost your peak power, but reduce your low-end torque a bit in the process.
It's not a new technology. The Dodge Stealth/Mitsubishi 3000GT had a similar thing. I'm sure there are other makes/models with it, as well.
I like it. I would actually like to see a dual-exhaust for the Sedan come out that employs twin variable-capacity mufflers.

Re: What is the point to have the variable muffler?
It makes a big difference with mid range torque. For whatever reason a little more back pressure improves torque at lower RPMs. At high rpms you want less back pressure. Think of it like variable valve timing and variable length intake runners for the exhaust. We'll not really but you get the idea.

so, I soppose that all the cars that are sophisticated enough should be equipped and tuned with their own engine with this kind of muffler? including G35 coupe?

Re: What is the point to have the variable muffler
Actually I believe the adjustment probably only adjusts the volume. It would be good if the difference was more than subtle. You could turn it up when you wanna be loud to impress and then you could turn down to quietly park when you get home late so you don't wake the missus! ahahaha...
Re: What is the point to have the variable muffler
It's more than just volume. I remember when I helped my dad tune his Suzuki GS750ES motorcycle, one of the mod's was a SuperTrapp muffler. You could change the exhaust restriction by attaching different numbers of discs to the end of the pipe, and there was always a balance we would try to achieve. Going either too restricted or too free flowing resulted in a power loss. It also affected where the powerband lay.
In those days, 16 years ago, we didn't dyno but tuned by the seat of our pants...lots of fun racing up and down the street trying different combinations.
So I believe there is a science behind the variable muffler, or maybe my dad and I didn't really know what we were doing???
