I recently purchased a 03 G35 sedan and a happy owner. I checked all 30k, 60k service was done at Infiniti and the car is @ 90k now.
As I was checking regular maintenance stuff the auto transmission fluid was about a inch high from the hot position of dip stick. Is this ok? It may have been driven for 30k like this and does not show any sign of malfunction. Also the color of fluid was very light red, more like transparent color. Is this normal, is this what Nissan Matic J fluid color is? (assuming all service done at Infiniti and that fluid is changed with Matic J, I know CVT fluid is transparent in color). Also I had to purchase the transmission dip stick as some early 03 models didn't come with it. The parts guy @ Infiniti could not find under 03 model but for 04 and that is the one I got. Is there a chance that trans fluid level/volume might be different from early 03 model to 04 and above model?

 

the tranny is so unpredictable. if it runs bad, you know how have too much fluid.

it has to be at the exact level..

 

the dealership told me that they use something else to measure the fluid level, like it was freaking rocket science. Personally I dont like the fact that my ride doesnt have a trans dip stick.

Hey OP could it be that ours(03) fluid level measure differently with the 04 dip stick? For example the dip stick tube might not be the same length. BTW was this part a direct fit?

 

did u check the trans fluid level while the car was at normal tempeture and running at idle??? because that's how u should check, most of the time if u just take the dip stick out of a cold car it will show much more

I have never heard to check tranny fluid with the car running.

Yes I checked transmission fluid while car is idling and fully warmed up (as mine is auto). Also dip stick was fitting right on but as tire_smoke96 mentioned, I want to confirm if dip stick tube length is indeed same for 03 and 04 models.
I guess I will find out what happens after draining a little fluid out.

 

how do you know you have too much fluid?

 

OK smart @ss, I guess I am too lazy since I don't have one. I did check the link you say for "most cars" and it says to check your owners manual to see if it should be running or not.

The ESM does say to warm up the engine and then check the level with it idling with fluid temps between 30 and 50 degrees C (86 to 122F).

But I guess you were too lazy too look that up.

 

So the atf fluid should be checked when the engines on and idling at normal operating temp, yes or no?

The ATF dip stick should have fluid above "hot" or in the middle of it?
