Ran at the track last night.....G35 Sedan 6MT

Went to the track last night, couldn't beat my best in the trap time, but the trap speed has increased.

My last time the conditions were 40 degrees, and no humudity. With the car only having 1500 miles. I got 14.32 at 97.6 mph, 2.166 60ft~.

This time the condtions were 80 degrees~, 70%~ humidity.

14.3735 at 98.08 mph 2.1669 60ft

14.4698 at 98.79 mph 2.2032 60ft.

Links to the rest of the timeslips are here.

The laucnh and the car just either spins or bogs, I could not find the right point to get her to work well still.

Only mods are Z-tube and K&N drop in. Car weighed in at 3360 without spare, before with spare the first time at the track I went I had a full load it weighed in at 3385. Both times were less than 1/4 tank of gas of 93 octane.

Bobby, what was your launch technique and the conditions and setup you did to get that time?

Those times are pretty slow. I thought the G35 would be faster. Perhaps the HP is overstated...

G35_TX,

Launch technique was about 2300 rpms slipping the clutch. The track prep was very poor that day, I chirped every gear down the straight. Car was run with 1/4 tank of gas and the spare tire removed. Can't remember the correct weather, but it was in the 40's with low humidity. My best time was the second pass hot lapping with no cool down.

What I find amazing is how close in performance the 6 speed and auto really are. I know the 6 speed is ultimately quicker, but the trap speeds are pretty close. I've watched ShortChaz pull pretty consistent 14.7s at over 96mph when his 03 auto was bonestock. He doesn't pull his spare, nor does he run on fumes, and he weighs about 270lbs. What's even more impressive is that he only gets lower 2.3 60 foots and he's running in 60+ degree weather and at a 1100' elevation. I honestly believe if I drove the car (nearly 100lbs lighter), 1/4 tank of gas, and a little VHT of the tires, I could squeeze out a high 14.4 at over 97mph. Put me on a sea level track and I think 14.2s would be possible. With an aftermarket torque converter and drag radials, the autos may actually be quicker.

Dave, you and me both know that autos are the best for drag racing. But remember the fbodys? The autos are just as fast as the 6spds on the track. Maybe the more power you put down, the less difference there is between the two?

I ran 99 mph trap speeds at 1243 feet altitude stock. Sounds like you have excellent launch technique. Now concentrate on shifting faster. No need to speed shift but work on timing the clutch/shifter simultaneously.

You are probably losing 1 second or more total on your shifts. This could easily account for the missing trap mph. The advantage a stick has over a stock auto is that you CAN shift faster, some people just don't shift fast enough

My times stock: 2.2 60', 14.4@99 best, consistently in the 14.5's

I did have a 101 trap speed once at the same altitude but that was on a really bad launch, I ran a 14.7 on that one.

Re: Ran at the track last night.....G35 Sedan 6MT

I think the 5-speed auto really levels the playing field when it comes to comparing it to the 6 speed. The 4-speed auto used in the older 3.5 VQs (Maxima/Altima) didn't have adquate gearing to match the power band of the 3.5 VQ. The new 5 speed auto helps out the 40-90mph acceleration to a great extent. With a looser torque converter, the auto should prove to be the 1/4 mile king, mod for mod. The advantage of the auto is that the torque converter gives significantly more torque on the launch and the auto is able to preload the chassis before a launch. Like Russ said, the 6 speed F-Body and auto F-Body are neck and neck in terms of 1/4 mile ET. I think we're seeing the same thing here with the G35s. The difference lies in the trap speed. The 6 speed appears to gain about 1-2mph over the auto even though both cars get pretty similiar ETs. The higher traps speed shows that the 6 speed is making more power, but has a harder time putting it down to the ground. In a higher mph roll on race, the 6 speed should walk the auto especially above 100mph.

Re: Ran at the track last night.....G35 Sedan 6MT

A question for the experienced, since we're on the subject:

Can we hit 'true' 60mph (regardless of speedo reading) in 2nd? I haven't been to the track yet, I'm raring to go, I was just kind of wondering about 0-60 numbers and if we have to contend with a 2nd shift before tru 60mph or not.

I have 225/55/17 tires (about 2% larger than stock) and I cannot make the police radar signs show 60 mph in 2nd. 59 is the best I have seen (in the 35 mph zone downtown.)

So no, I don't think you can do 0-60 without going to third.
