I think that the front wheels are not locked with the rest of the transmission because the only time the front wheels have torque (pull power away from the rear) is when the AWD solenoid has current running through it which engages the clutch in the transfer case.
The front wheels will always feel like they wont move if you just lift the car and try to move the wheels. The front wheels, front differential, driveshafts, and propshaft all the way back to the transfer case are still connected and will give a good deal of resistance.
If they tow you *** end up, the front shafts/prop shaft will all spin without a trans cooler or anything else running which can be bad. The front diff shares its oil with the engine oil, so it probably would be ok for awhile, but still with nothing running.. who knows.
