I am looking to trade in my 2002 BMW 330CI and get a 2006 G35x. My problem had a ton of "known" issues that had I known about I may not have purchased. They include transmission, water pump failure, bushings/ball joints, door seals, window regulators, frozen locks, etc.

Anyways I have been searching this website but have not seen a list of known issues. I see something about the radio on a 04/05 but I am looking at a 06 with 17K miles.

What are some common failures people have seen and maintenance?

Do people find the bluetooth built in useful? This one has it, but from what I see it seems to be lacking compared to BT in other cars. I did a lot of my own work on the BMW (brakes, oil, ball joints) - is the G35 easy to work on?

my experince so far(although i'm in an 04)
-amazing in the snow.
-great amount of power for an awd system, with alot of aftermarket support for it.
-very comfortable, but firm seats, which can be irratating on long drives(i go to va beach several times a year, and around maryland i HAVE to stop and stretch)
-passengers have always seemed very comfortable in the back, and the wife loves having control over how much heat she blasts at her face.
DOWN SIDES
-people talk about the rattling and creaks in this cars body panels, i haven't had much of an issue, although i think i've created a couple in the process of my aftermarket HU install, specifically in the clock area of the dash.
-if you're really tall, and have passengers frequently, there really is a lack of legroom for the passenger(i'm certainly not going to be uncomfortable, it's MY car and i'm DRIVING.
-also, if you plan on altering the stock stereo setup, the fit kit products are extremly poorly made, with one looking like a cheesy kmart brand with rubberized buttons, and the other looking beautiful but the DD space was apparently measured by a blind man, as there is a large gap. this may not be an issue for you as the dash of the 06+ is different. ask around if it applies. if you plan on adding subs, short of getting a 4080 or something else that is custom, you will be left with VERY little trunk space. i have two 12's and two amps sitting on top. currently i can fit my baby's stroller, an ice and snow broom, and a few random things into it. after that it's tetris in a trunk.
-if you are dead set on an X and you want to lower it, currently, and for the foreseeable future, your ONLY option is springs, NO COILOVERS. you also supposedly can't run staggered wheels on them, i assume it puts strain on the diff... there is one member that i'm aware of running staggered rims, wheel see(sorry for the pun!) if he incurs any damage from doing that long term.

overall i'm loving this car. i haven't had any issues working on it yet, and it's remarkble to me how much better than the maxima(my friends all drive maxs and started a debate on the org about how why if the g was better) my g35 feels, both to the touch and in how in handles and performs. the only drawback is the X not being as supported by the aftermarket-place. because of this a lot of research should be done before you purchase or CERTAINLY attempt anything drivetrain or suspension related. hope this helped and was more than just rambling.

Cool thanks, thats good to know. A lot of those things would not apply to me so I should be fine. ( I am short, my BMW coupe has sports suspension and package so its a firm ride already that I am used to, and my doors rattle like crazy currently). I have staggered now but I would be fine with the same tires around.

I have an 04x also and I love the car, over all I am very satisfied with it. The awd works well ( I live in ND) I still have summer tires on my car, I have gotten stuck twice, in OVER 2.5ft of snow. I am sure if I had the right tires I wouldn't have had this problem. The ride is smooth and enjoyable. One con about the car is the factory navigation sucks!!! I did get lost out here in ND and ended up having to pull up my long and lat to send to the sheriffs dept (long story) but what I am getting at is it was correct. I haven't had any mechanical problems other than my yellow top battery freezing, the car sat for 3 weeks outside in severe cold temperatures when I put the battery back in it fired up right away no probs. When I had mine in for maint. at the dealership I got an 08x loaner and I couldn't wait to get my 04x back... If you have any questions just ask...

In my opinion, the Bluetooth isn't that great.

You can hear the other person fine, but everyone I talk to on mine says it sounds like i'm echoing or something and they hate talking to me on it

Great thread. I just joined these boards 'cause I am considering buying another car to couple with my Legacy GT. Have searched out the 05 G35 x and am intrigued. I don't really NEED the AWD cause I live in FL and alreday have the Subaru but like the extra grip in the rain, no wheel spin when I romp on it and the uniquness of it.

I have had 2 Nissans and thought that moving up to an Infiniti would be a good move. I love the styling and classiness of this car. Looking forward to a drive.

Known issues that i've discovered so far

-burning rubber smell with heat on after using VDC/ABS in snow (A lot of guys have this issue...so it may be "normal?")

-Radio board likes to give out taking half the electronics with it. Common in '03's, but i had it happen in my '06 ONCE and then never happen again (knock on wood)

-Plastic valve covers heat up and leak right around the time the powertrain warranty is about to expire. Basically you discover oil around your spark plugs. (fortunately this hasn't happened to me)

-6 speed models have oil consuption issues, but you want an X so you won't have to worry about that.

my 05 with 80k has been virtually issue-less minus stupid lil things.. like the wierd burnin smell, creaky noise from back windows.. thats it! at first i didnt like my g35x as much as my altima v6.. but the car has really grown on me especially with the recent snow! hopefully the G stays this reliable.. *fingers crossed*

The X is basically RWD above 15mph. Unless you're totally ****ting the bed with it or going through somewhere without traction (snow, tons of rain, dirt/sand), 95% of the time it is RWD. Of course, regular sedans do weigh less and are offered in 6MT. YMMV on all of that.

i dont think there are major problems assoicated with this car, there might be a handful of people with problems here and there but it doesn't apply to all.

oil consumption would be the main problem, it might affect like 10-20% of cars out there, but mainly on the rev-up which the X sedan wont have.

The burnt smell is one key thing, its not a problem just a smell that doesn't get into the cabin. Just when you leave the car.

trunk space is small, no rear fold-down. MPG isn't high or low.
