Infant Car Seat in the Sedan

So we just had a baby and got a Maxi Cosi Mico rear facing infant car seat. I was surprised that the seat required so much space that there was no way to mount it behind the driver seat or in the middle. It's currently behind the passenger seat which had to be moved so far forward that no one can sit there any more...even my dog seems squished there.

I never considered the G35 sedan a small car... is it supposed to be this cramped or is Maxi Cosi seat particularly big? Has anyone had better luck with other rear facing seats?

Thanks in advance.

It is not just a problem with the G35. Even my 2004 Explorer suffered the same problem with a rear facing car seat. Most rear facing car seats take up a lot of room in most vehicles. We ended up trying all of the car seats out at the store and the only seat that we found gave us more room was the Britax Marathon.

I haven't tried putting a seat in the middle of the G so I can't comment on whether it will work or not. Good luck.

If I don't use the base, I can strap the infant car seat in just fine. With the base, it bangs against the back of my driver seat. I'm 5'6", and don't sit very far back, so it fits ok. The 2nd row of our 05 Pathfinder gives just a tiny bit more room, so the G35 isn't giving up too much space....

I had no problem with the rear facing seat (in the middle) in my G sedan. When buying, I even test fit it into the G to make sure. I'm not that tall though.

I was disappointed too. Just my 2 cents. I'm just looking forward to the day he's big enough to turn the seat around, then we'll have plenty of room.

Some seats take up a lot more room than others. The one we have in our Odyssey van barely fit when it was rear facing. Notably, the handle wouldn't fold down unless the front seat was pulled forward a bit. The Odyssey has sliding middle row seats with lots of room, so I can see that this car seat would not fit into most cars.

I found a smaller seat that fit no problem in the G. I actually bought the car seat for my Corolla, then got the G, which has more room than the Corolla. With the Corolla the front passenger seat had to be adjusted almost all the way forward while in the G the seat can be adjusted normally.

I didn't realize this was such as widespread problem. Thanks for the info, I think I can resist this push to get bigger car and wait this one out. I can justify keeping the G if even the Odyssey and Explorers are cramped.

I wonder how the seat would fit into the 370z

You can't put a rear facing seat in the front of a car

My and my wife both drive coupes and we're expecting our first soon. This will get pretty interesting when it comes time to put the rear facing car seat in either of our cars.

Hahaha, funny you should mention the Z. I had to get rid of my 350Z so i could haul around my little guy. Unfortunately strapping the kid to the roof is still illegal in all 50 states. The things we do for kids ... ugh!

Car seats are just a total pain. These things have gotten absolutely monsterous which really makes no sense. I understand protective designs needed, but still, the size of these things is silly.

Anyways, I'm 6' 2" and my wife is 5' 8". We currently have a 4 month old and a 4 y/o. The 4 y/o sits in a booster and the 4 month old sits in a rear facing infant seat in a base behind the passenger seat. My wife still has pleny of leg room and I can sit on that side as well, though not quite as comfortably as her. The infant seat barely touches the rear of seat back. We're using a Graco Infant "Jungle Adventure" seat which is $80 from Target http://www.target.com/b/ref=in_se_pa...3&fromBrowse=1 . We have one seat and each of our cars has a base ($40). When my daughter gets old enough, we'll turn her around and use the convertable seat we used for my son.

My wife's car is a 98 Legacy GT wagon and we have the same seating arrangement with child seats though her car is quite a bit tighter than mine and I can't see comfortably on the passenger side. I drive all the time so it's no big deal.

I've used and still do use a Britax Boulevard (awesome car seats btw, just a bit spendy) and didn't have any problems. The great thing about Britax from a safety standpoint, is that the maximum rear facing weight/size is extremely-high (rear-facing is safer) and when you turn your child around, the limit is higher so you'll be able to move to a booster seat, rather than having to buy another car seat.

Congrats btw!

That is a very good idea. The base is what takes up the most space. Is that very safe or even legal?

I totally regret getting my sedan now that I have 2 kids under 3yrs old. It's a total pain to get them in and out of the car compared to our Explorer. Half the time I pull my daughter out, I bang her head. Our youngest sits rear facing and I barely have any legroom when he's back there. It's just akward getting them in and out of that small back seat area. I also use the Britax marathon because it got the best ratings online. Our Explorer is not reliable so we use the G for long trips. What a nightmare trying to cram everything into a small sedan. For the first time in my life, I can't wait to get a minivan.

Wow, glad I didn't put either our Marathon or the Graco in the G....both fit perfectly in my Maxima in the rear center. The rear facing seats are really made to fit in the center of the backseat
