How important is the front spoiler?
I wasn't sure where exactly to post this concern so if the mods need to move it, I apologize.
Concern/question: Yesterday I did a complete hand wash of my '05 sedan and noticed the front spoiler (not sure if this is the correct term), the black, plastic thing that stretches the width of the car under the bumper, was close to falling off. In fact, it was completely detached except for a few inches on each end. Seeing that is was not re-attachable, I removed it completely.
Is this front spoiler necessary? Has anyone had theirs removed and or replaced. I wonder how expensive that would be?? I prefer having one rather than not but just wonder if this will effect the cars performance at all (wind resistance, lift, etc).
Thanks for any advice / input.

I've been running mine without one for the last 5-6 months, and through a few days of wet/dirty conditions, I haven't run into any problems. It might get a little dirty under there but that's it. Makes oil changes a lot easier since there's no underbody cover piece to remove to access the oil drain plug and filter.

I'm not exactly sure, but I would imagine that the spoiler is a fully integrated part of the already sleek shape of car, which gives it dramatically improved aerodynamic properties. The spoiler is likely a factor on the coefficient of drag. The front spoiler pushes more of the airflow at the front over the surface of the body rather than allowing it underneath. It probably is designed to channel what airflow there is under the body rather than allow it to dissipate from the sides and through the engine bay-- which would cause more drag. I also wonder if it might have an effect on wind noise, stability at higher speeds and mpg.
