Problem with start up

I am having problems with my 04 sedan. About a month ago it barely started up and when it did I was hearing a noise that sounded like a BB rolling around in a tin can except it was a much sharper noise. Then when I was driving it I was getting a horrible fume smell in the car, the smell went away the next day. Then I went to Florida for a week and when I got back I tried to start my car but it wouldn't start for about 15 minutes. Then just this morning I started my car up, then I turned it off, and then about 10 seconds later I tried to start it back up but it failed, so I turned the key again and it almost failed, but I gave it some gas and it started up. What the hell is up with my car? Has anyone experienced this before? The car has about 55,000 miles on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

the battery is almost 5 years old and I was told by my mechanic that they last for 5 years. So its almost time for a new one.
