The sunroof is supposed to have a safety "auto-reverse" mechanism that detects an object stuck in the sunroof when closing - at least according to the manual. Being an engineer, I just had see if this works. It does NOT, at least on my sedan! I don't see any optical sensors, so assume this is somehow force based. I pressed against the sunroof edge while closing and wasn't able to get it to auto-reverse. Anybody tried this, or know how it's supposed to work?

 

My salesman demonstrated it for me. Closed it on his arm. It reopened.

I tried it myself after buying the car too. It isn't quite as sensitive as you might think, and you feel it, but it seems to work. I would not try it on your neck, though

I've got a 03.5 and can attest to the safety reverse.

My sun shade came off its track and the sun roof would not close cuz it kept sensing it in the way.

The sun roof will auto-reverse, at least on 03 sedans.

Probably works the same as the windows, the salesman showed me those auto reverse!

recently, some BMWer (soon-to-be engineering grad student) tested one of my auto-reverse windows. it worked on him. heh, maybe i'll ask him to test out my sunroof, too. you engineers are brave.
