Has AWD on G35 had Growing Pains?

Has AWD on G35 had Growing Pains?
Hello again, everyone. I'm still undecided about what car to get. I'm focusing quite heavily on either a 2004 or 2005 G35x. I learned a hard lesson a few cars ago not to buy a first year remodeled/redesigned car. Since 2004 was the first year the sedan G had AWD I was wondering if anyone has had problems with its reliability, operation, or performance.
Thanks again folks. I always appreciate the valuable information you provide. Sorry if this is a repost.

Re: Has AWD on G35 had Growing Pains?
I have a G35X with 7800 miles and have experienced no problems. The 04 models have only been available since December 2003 so I would imagine few high mileage cars are posting here.
If I were looking into reliability issues, I would research AWD FX35 owner’s experiences. This is basically the same system in the G35X and has been available for a year longer. Check out freshalloy.com where you'll find a FX35 forum or edmunds.com.

Obviously 1 or 2 is not a significant enough sample size.
If you went by complainers, you would get the impression that the seats are completely terrible in the G35.
And yet just because they don't bother me doesn't disprove that they are uncomfortable to a minority of the drivers.
If I were buying a G35 now, I would just go ahead and get the AWD version for piece of mind. But last September, I didn't have any choice but ordering one at the dealership, probably paying closer to retail than I did, and waiting until at least December.

fotodad... hey, have you seen this post? it is about the 2005 and it sounds like there will be some changes.
i have a 2003 sedan and yeah, we have had tons of TSBs and re-calls, but infiniti has done a very good job at providing remedies (especially the brake warranty). good luck with your decision.

Re: Has AWD on G35 had Growing Pains?
On a related subject. Has anyone driven the G35X in a good snowstorm? How does it perform? I know someone will say to do a search, I tried, but I didn't get any specific categories related to how the X actually handles in the snow. Any help would be appreciated.

vtz-
I wouldn't worry to much about the teething pains on the AWD system, as was mentioned above. I haven't had so much as a hiccup in my 6 months of ownership.
As for the snowstorm issue, I was fortunate to pick up my car before the last big dump of the year in Chicago, and the car behaved beyond all expectations. My only word of caution would be that the car seems to imbue a sense of invincibility with its unerring traction.......but the braking is the same/worse than 2 wheel drive variants. When I say worse, it is only because of the extra weight it carries around (and not MY spare tire either, but I do weigh 245# ) and the fact that you can get up to faster speeds than just about everyone else due to the AWD. The next thing you know.....you are going to fast for the corner or for the stop.
In other words, buy the car and you will be pleased.

Re: Has AWD on G35 had Growing Pains?
ChicagoX,
Wow! You've got a tremendous memory! Yea, I think the Acura TL has hit the backburner. I love the interior, but the exterior just doesn't do anything for me. And if the 2003 G35 had a lot of TSBs, you should check out all the complaining about quality issues on Acura-TL.com. If the TL would become an AWD I'd be more interested, but it sounds like it will stay FWD.
Okay, I'd like to change the subject of this post since I've basically gotten the answer I was looking for regarding the dependability of the G's AWD. I'm torn between getting an 04 or an 05. If I get the 04 I can probably save over three thousand bucks, BUT I won't be getting the quality improvements Infiniti made in the 05s. If I get an 05 I'll pay more but get the quality improvements and upgrades in interior and exterior. Or aren't the upgrades worth the extra money?
What would you guys/gals do? Since the 05s are going to be rather pricey. And I'm sure no one will be discounting from MSRP; I'm leaning toward an 04.
Help!
ChicagoX: Good point about the AWD providing an unsafe sense of security. I see it everyday with SUVs in the ditch when I drive to work in the winter. Also, that extra weight the AWD carries definitely will make it tougher to stop on snow and ice!
Edited by fotodad on 07/19/04 02:50 PM.
