cost to install double din w/ navi?

Hey,
I'm a newbie to the car custom scene. I just got a DD kit for my 05 sedan and a Pioneer Avic F700bt. How much should it cost for a shop to install it? First quote I got was $550 (includes adapter for steering wheel controls, but that shouldn't be too much extra). I was hoping a lot less. Any help on a reasonable cost?

Thanks!

Check on crutchfield.com, as you may be able to find a better deal. Their mounting kits I heard were $99.99 if you buy a deck from them. Then you get a voucher to have it installed at no additional cost at a local audio shop. I've seen the mounting kits on our car sell for around $200. It's ridiculous. Keep us posted on your progress and your decision!

cost should be $100-150 on labor

plus whatever adapters you need. mainly a radio harness runs from $5-25, antenna adapter $25, steering wheel control ( no idea but i say $50), you might need a output convert in increase the power going into the amps $50

that should be it. $550 is way overboard to install it.

Thanks for the suggestions, I was thinking like $100 tops since I have all the supplies. I cant go w/ Crutchfield because I already got a good deal on the DD kit and Pioneer system, but thanks! I'm in the Philly area but willing to travel. Any more suggestions appreciated! Thanks!

if you already have the DD finisher and AC controls, all you need is the harnesses(~$20), antenna adapter(~$20), steering wheel control($~45-$50), install should be ($100 - $200 max).

What do you currently have right now to go into the car? If you want a cheap looking Metra double din finisher with their nasty looking AC controls, let me just advice you to increase your budget and get an OEM JDM radio double-din kit right now. Metra looks really cheap!

Install depends on what modules you want to add. Some get a double din along with navigation brain, steering wheel controls, bluetooth modules, rearview cameras, ipod harness, etc. Your install cost depends on how much work is being done. There are some modules that require hidden wiring that will requiretaking panels apart and that increases the amount of labor invovled.

If you get a navigation, you have to tap into the speed sensor and install brain, if you get a bluetooth module you may need to run a hidden wire up to the roof through the pillar, if you install a rearview camera you need to get it mounted in the rear and route it to the front, and ipod harness requires wiring to the center console for the hidden look. Everything will add up the cost. I'd say standard install with no modules, and you having all the components: $100-$150.

A quote is just an estimate from them. Tell them if they won't do it for $200, including parts, you will go elsewhere. In this economy places are starving for business so most will negotiate. They are raping you because you did not buy the stereo an dd from them so they want to make their money in labor. You could also find out who the installer is, wait till he leaves work and ask him to do it for $100 +parts in his garage.

That or buy the steering wheel adapter and other parts and do the install yourself. There are several threads that have detailed pictures and instructions on how to do it. And I am a car stereo installer telling you to do this. If you came to my shop your charges would be. Pac steering-100.99 plus 59.99 install. 21.99 radio harness. 14.99 antenna adapter. 99.99 base install. addition 99.99 for amp intergration if you have the full bose amp underneath your back deck. So a total of 297.95 plus tax on parts for non amplified, 397.94 plus tax for amplified.

DIY for this install is a piece of cake! I put the AVIC-F90BT in my car, so the install is identical to the F700BT

If you can crimp/soldier wires, you can do this. The single most confusing part was the steering wheel controls adapter, everything else is very straightforward.

The microphone can go a few places, currently, I have mine right between the windshield and the sunglasses compartment. The microphone wire runs inside the headliner (just shove it in there, no need to remove) and inside the pillar (pulls right off) through the dash and to the headunit. The unit picks up both driver and passenger well enough for voice commands. I don't use it often enough to say whether it works really well in that position to pick up both for conversing on the phone.

The GPS antenna picks up a good signal if it's mounted on the metal mounting bracket that goes up and screws in just below the analog clock - and it's invisible there

In addition to the antenna adapter ($10-20), steering wheel control adapter (~$50) and wiring harness (~$20) you also need a faceplate adapter. I used the Metra 99-9999 and inset mine just a little bit.

See /\ /\ Its easy and like Wrathernaut said, the steering wheel control is the hardest part. Just set yourself up some time when you won't be rushed. Read, reread and read the instructions for everything and its a piece of cake. Plus you can stand by and say "I did that!"

I was going to pay somebody to do mine since I didn't want to mess up the G.

He didn't give a response quick enough, so I started it myself, afterward, I was glad I didn't spend any money paying anyone to do it, it was that easy.

Hell, if you can't find a member locally that's done it, I'll give you help with whatever pictures you need. Maybe even just bust out the camera and do a DIY video.

Oh, and the steering wheel controls aren't hard, it's just a little confusing programming everything through one recessed button, and looking up the diode references to make sure you solder the right ones in.
