Need advice - I have a chance to buy an '03.5 G35

The G35 is an '03 with 9,999 miles on it. It's born date is Jun '03, so the in service date is probably Jul or Aug of '03. Thus the car basically has a 3 year 50K factory warranty left on it. It is a Twight Blue, and comes equipped with the Premium Package, Sunroof, Trunk Mat, and body side molding. Right now, I can get it at 28K - but there is still room left to deal (I'd be trading in my '03 Avalanche which is loaded and only has 5700K miles on it).

Here's what concerns me... there isn't a used book value on '04 G35s yet, but will be when the 05s arrive (less than 2 months away). That mean that the '03.5 G35 value will decrease too. How much of a drop in value would everyone speculate will occur? 2K less... 3K less...? The '03 originally had a new car invoice of $30,207. I went out to the Kelly Blue Book site and plugged in 10 miles (let's pretend that I drove it home from the dealer and garaged it) for an '03 Trade-in value and got a dollar value of $26,050. That means that the '03 roughly dropped over 4K in value.

I don't have to trade now (or actually any time)... I could wait until the '05s come out and look at getting a low mileage '04, or could still get an '03 albeit it at a better price.

Is it a good deal on the '03... keeping in mind that it will drop in value again shortly?

Thanks in advance for your help.

jfgranger,
A couple of thoughts for you:
1.) I bought a used 03.5 AT with bose, sunroof, winter package, trunk mat, sport package, leather w/ 14,500 miles. I paid 27,400 + tax. That was last August.

2.) I started w/ invoice price, took 20% off that, and started with that as my initial price.

3.) 28,000 seems high considering the 05's are right around the corner. But dealer prices will always be more. Consider a private seller.

4.) You should be able to get a used 04 for about 28,000. Then you get larger wheels, tire pressure sensors, and the winter package as standard.

5.) The 05's are right around the corner. The should have a more ergonomic friendly interior, 17 extra hp, slightly modified exterior + other things I'm forgetting-do a search if you are interested. Depends how much $ is a factor-but it sure would be nice to be starting @ 285+ hp.

6.) It sounds like time is not an issue. I would shop around a bit and wait for a used 04 for a similar price, or ante up for the 05.

just my $.02

Re: Need advice - I have a chance to buy an '03.5

I plugged in private party sale and got $27,620. Plugged in my car with 20,000mi and came out with $26,370. That's a 03.5 black on black with the premium/winter packages. I bought the car last June. Only thing I've done to it was to have a clear bra installed.

Where are you located? I bought my car with an auto because my wife was going to be driving it but now we just bought a Honda minivan. I was thinking of trading in my car to get a 6spd coupe but maybe we could make a deal and save each other some money.

I'm in Omaha, NE. If I get a G35, I'd be trading in my '03 Avalanche... so I would need to go through a dealer (by working out a trade, I can forgo paying sales tax in NE - which is 7%).

WOW!!! You have 5,700,000 miles on your Avalanche? That's impressive. What'd you do? Drive to Mars and back?

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I hate going through dealers... it was awesome buying my Odyssey because I didn't have any trade in. I was able to email/phone around every dealership in the area... pit them all against each other ... I ended up getting 4200 off the sticker...

I hate trade-ins you got this sweet deal worked out then they start trying to f*ck you over on the trade.

I will be interested to hear how well you like dealing with our local Infiniti dealer. I also live in Omaha, and am trying to get the mrs. convinced we need a G35, so any help would be appreciated.

Re: Need advice - I have a chance to buy an '03.5

As I posted earlier, what complicates this decision for me is the fact that there isn't a "book" value yet on a used '04 G35. Once this comes out (and it will be shortly), the value will drop correspondingly for the '03. The '03 depreciated $3157 from the original invoice to the "outstanding" trade allowance. I'm thinking of offering the dealer a price of $24,900. I arrived at this by taking subtracting $3157 from the current dealer asking price of $27,999 (I rounded the price up to the nearest hundred). Does a price of $24,900 sound fair for a '03 G35 Sedan with Leather, the Premium pkg, and a Trunk Mat? It's build date is 6-03, so it was a very late '03 model. The thing that I don't like about it is this... it doesn't have the '03 winter Pkg (heated seats and heated mirrors) - and this is standard on an '04. I really don't have to trade, so I can wait for more used '04s to show up... but I am starting to get the fever on the other hand and don't want to pass up a potentially good deal.

Last time I checked, Omaha Nebraska got pretting f*(#@ing cold in the winter. I live in Ohio-still pretty chilly in the winter and I thank heated seat god every time I get into my car. This year, I will add remote start. Wait for a used 04 unless you absolutelyl need to pay +/- $25,000k (sorry-I couldn't resist) for your car. Wait for exactly the car you want-it sucks to walk out every day and drive something that was "a good deal" but not what you truly wanted.

Good Luck!

Re: Need advice - I have a chance to buy an '03.5

hey man - btw...you dont have to go to the dealer to get a good price for your trade in. it makes it less of a hassle, yes. my friend recently went to carmax and got way more for his explorer then the dealer would give him.

easy too. all you have to do is take it in for an estimate. if you like the price, you have 7 days to decide if you will take it or not.

i am not sure if this applies in your state, but doing a private party auto transaction here makes your vehicle exempt from sales tax! that alone should save you a few grand. get the $ from carmax and use it to buy the other car. employers usually aslo have credit unions that they work with that give good loans to the employees, without even having to be a part of the credit union!

in the end, id say get the car just cause of the damn color, but i am obviously biased. ^-^ i was thinking of going the used route, but once i saw the color in real life at the dealership, i had to have it. ^-^ i talked them into a sweet a$$ deal too, so i am as happy as a clam.

Re: Need advice - I have a chance to buy an '03.5

I told the salesman (from Steven Infiniti in Wichita Kansas) that I'd trade my '03 Avalanche for the '03 G35 plus a check for 3 grand made out to me. That in effect meant that I'd be getting 28K for my Avalanche, and getting the G35 for 25K. He said that he'd have to work the numbers and get back to me, but that 3K was too much for him to give me. Seeing how KBB will have the '05 G35 prices out by the end of the August (and presumably a value for a used '04 G35), should I stick to my guns insisting paying no more than 25K for the G35 - or should I slightly budge... say to 25.5K or 26K? Any guesses as to how much this vehicle will depreciate once there's a book value for used 04s? Again, thanks in advance for everyone's help.
