Can you guys explain the process of your paint job in detail for me?
It will be very helpful to not only me, but also all 03,04 g35 owners..

 

i bout some paint online and then some primer at home deopt. i was gonna do it "right" by taking the lowers off but i got lazy and took a lot of tape and taped my car off. i didnt sand it, i just took some alcohol and some water and a rag and i cleaned the surface. when it dried i sprayed the primer and when the primer dried i sprayed the paint. thats pretty much it. haha

how many times you applied coats each for primer and paint?

 

you guys can do this as the route to save money but i will have to warn you.

the texture on these under sill are a rougher plastic. Unless you take the time to sand it smooth, even if you just "prep" it, the color will appear duller. The reason being, the front and rear bumper + doors are all smooth......but the plastics on the sills are not. Anytime you add color to a textured surface, it will show up even after the paint. If you look closely at the pictures, the color all looks duller. On the IP it's because its been sanded and it needs more clear; on the EM, it's actually a very nice garage job (best i've seen). however, since it wasn't sanded smooth, it will still appear to be a shade off.

Then you run into the problem of wetsanding......ideally it should be done for a banging finish. I think if you're not cofident enough to do it, save up some $$$ and get it professionally done. It looks worse when its a shade off than when it's black.

My sides were painted, and this is how it'd look when done by a shop. $300 was the cost.

you can tell when it's done professionally, there are no texture difference from looking at the fender and then onto the sides. Same goes when looking at the door and onto the sides.

I really want to get paint work from professional,
i don't have money to spend for decorating my car..

I don't need extra glossy, i just want to reduce the gap between upper and lowers.
KushG35 and Get someg35's results look good, I can be satisfied if mine looks like that.

 

i used 600 grit sandpaper, black sandable primer, sanded some more and sprayed duplicolor gloss black paint for like 3 coats, and 3 coats of clear, im getting an aftermarket lip kit so is just temporary to hold me over till then, did my mirror bases the same way

btw, did you disassemble the lowers when you did the work?

 

np, i didnt remove them, i put alot of masking tape above the lowers on the bumpers and bottom of doors, if you still happen to get overpray a good buff with scratch remover should take it off

 

i only used one can for the whole thing. and not even one can maybe half. and yeah if you do have overspray you dont even need to buff and scratch remover i just rubbed it off.. but then again it was minimal

i used about 2 coats adhesive promoter, 3 basecoats, and 3 coats of clear. i should of wetsanded, G sedans right, in some lighting it will be lil darker, but overall i'm very pleased how it came out. my process was the same as someg35 but i didn't use primer.

 

Ivory Pearl isn't going to come out of a spray can looking stock. Its a very hard paint color to match and takes multiple layers to achieve the pearl effect. Similar to to "candy" paints.

The sills look much better painted by a shop. Thats how mine were done and it blends in perfectly with the rest of the car. Looks like it was there stock.

Nothing you do yourself from a rattle can will come out looking the same.

what's the difference between primer paint and adhesive promoter?

 

Definitely get an adhesion promoter for plastic. It will also serve as your primer. I also strongly suggest reading my DIY and understand the correct way to prep the plastic. It must be clean and there are ways to test it to make sure it truely is clean. Removing the side sills only takes a few minutes. I suggest removing them so it's easier to prep and paint.
