New car break-in period angst - Solved

Well, at least temporarily I solved my yearning to mash the go pedal. Owned it for 3 weeks now, and with only 260 miles on it, it tripped a CEL. Probably just an emissions thing, but I'm not taking chances on a brand new car.

So into the shop she goes, and at least for today I'm playing around with the G35x loaner. Nice not having to baby around, and also nice to remember why I bought the car in the first place. Though I will say the amount of rattles in the loaner has got me a little peeved, since I already noticed a couple of rattles in the door panels on my car. Oh well, if the dealer doesn't fix it, i'll see about getting some dynomat stuffed in the doors.

Not a problem for me. Mine's two-and-a-half weeks old, and has 1850 miles on it. . . (I drove it off the lot with 11 miles on the clock). Ouch.

I was just going to say that. I bet the service guys give it a good go. What about the test driver before you?

I know there is conflicting evidence about break in technics. I have heard all sides. On mine, I took it easy most of the time but you can bet that I got on it a few times just to see what it would do.

Having a loaner while you're new G35 is in the shop is good and bad. It's good because you can some fun in their G35 without worrying about the break-in period. It's bad because then you'll have to go back to driving like a granny in your G35 once you get it back from the dealership.

I just got my '04 6MT last Thursday and have to go through the break-in all over again. I can't recall how long it took me to clear the 1200 mile mark in my '03 6MT but with a 60-mile round trip commute, and a couple of road trips, it shouldn't take too long.

Yeah, still grannying along. That's the 'problem' with having a 3-mile commute. Tomorrow is the 1-month mark for me, and I've barely cracked 500 miles. Gotta do something about that...

In my opinion, babying a modern engine during breakin is unnecessary. The main thing is not to subject it to SUSTAINED high RPMs early on, and always make sure the engine is fully warmed up before running hard. I stayed under 4K until 200 miles, then brought it up to redline for just a second or two using partial throttle. Then drove normally for a minute or two to let things cool down, then up to redline again the same way. Did this a few times a day until 500 miles. Then did a full throttle run up to 60 MPH letting the trans do the shifting. Did this once a day up to 900 miles. Then went on a long (1100 mile) interstate trip. Varied cruise setpoint from 65-80 MPH every 15 minutes or so with a few 110 MPH runs.

Then had the dealer change the oil to Mobil 1 5/30 at 2200 miles. The service writer didn't want to do it. He said the engine wasn't broken in yet and to come back at 3750. I assured him that I broke it in and he still didnt want to do it. So I got pissed and got the service manager and had my oil changed. I have over 41000 on it now and service every 7500 miles. The engine barely uses a qt. every 3500 miles and I swear runs stronger than it ever has. So dont be too gentle on your baby G, she can take it.
