automatics...
Even when fully locked, it still feels a little sloppy. I mean when i *rarely* drive in manumatic mode, and i try to roll on the throttle a bit, there is always a little bit of delay and a disconnected feel to the actual acceleration of the car. It's never truely like a real manual which if you roll on the throttle a bit, you feel instant response in terms of thrust. It basically feels like the engine is directly connected to the rear wheels in a peppy stick car.
Of course, i realize the 5AT is not a 6MT, so it will never truely feel the same, but i have yet to expereince a "fun" manumatic car. Even my '07 IS250 which has paddle shifters is a bore to drive in manual mode. My old '05 Maxima was the same way, as well as other auto cars i've had the pleasure of driving. But with that said, i do agree that the 5AT when left in full auto mode is one of the better automatic transmissions i've ever driven. It's responsive, esp when it gets into 2nd gear, and i love how when i drive aggressively, the trans holds the gear if i let off the gas instead of automaticcally upshifting so that if i get back on the gas again, i'm not wasting time with a downshift. Pure joy.
But i'm just too much of a clutch die-hard to love manumatic mode...but maybe i'm unfairly biased. I'm giving it an honest shot. I used it on my ride home tonight. Maybe over the long winter while my stick car is snuggled in the garage, i'll force myself to use it and give it a chance
As for dynos between auto and manuals...it really depends heavily on the actual transmission design. WHile i have yet to see an auto dyno more HP to the rear wheels than a stick car (with similar engine outputs), i have seen different types of manual transmissions rob different amounts of power behind the same actual engine. The Ford 5spd has slightly less rotational mass and more favorable gearing than the Ford 6-spd. So a lot of times guys will swap without really doing research and end up with ultimately slower cars due to more parasitic drivetrain loss and gearing unfavorable to their engine setup.
Plus, the 6MT cars do come with the 298HP rev-up while the 5AT gets the 280HP DE. On paper, the auto should put less power to the ground, but that doesn't automatically give it a win. Spend some time at a drag strip and you'll see plenty of 300+ HP manual cars struggling to make it out of the low 15's.

^^^ the symptom you describe is similar to what I experienced quite a while back - it was corrected with Osiris ETC update... many people (including myslef) have resported much snappier/quicker of the line acceleration from that download.
What all it does specifically, I'm not certain - however, it is more about electronic throttle control than transmission... but I wouldn't be surprised if your symptoms were corrected form this upgrade.

I agree with Mike. My early 03 with the TS reflash has done wonders for the low end response. It's even faster to down shift. Probably has to do with w/ the ign advance/TB position as it relates to what gets sent to the TCM for it's own shift logic.
DaveB, from post #21.
So let me get this straight you've posted 16 times in this thread. Yes 16, I've only posted 11 including this post (for reference) and you've "tried" to call me out but yet do not want me to respond
What good logic you have... there is a reason why I haven't responded to any of your posts because just like blkonblkGsedan you both seem to be swinging from the same sack. Do you want a DIY on how to add member to ignore list? Because I can actually defend myself without posting stupid pictures or making the posts you have
Or.... I can end with saying I can't wait for your response and when you do whine about it
For a second there I thought you were 4DGS and I got
but then saw it wasn't him, just another posting like him so I was like
Are you 4DGS? Are you OCG35? Are you Tangerine? Didn't think so. Funny how you are trying to act like a badass even though it doesn't concern you. You remind me of one of those guys that cheers in the background for someone but when **** hits the fan you are the first to run

Can we kill this thread?
I thought it had died...
Tangerine, you talk about raising stakes, but you still don't have a car to race with even if we were to waste our time with that. So why are you still posting about it?

After the TA 6-Speed, I really wasn't looking forward to the Automatic in the G. And I'm still not super crazy about it, but what you mentioned is, for me, a huge redeeming factor. Before the 2000, I had a 94 TA Auto and let me tell you, a GM auto will look for any excuse to go into overdrive, it was very annoying that when you let off it would just pick the next gear ( which BTW will really screw you up if you have to throttle back a powerslide
)Also, I wasn't aware of the Osiris reflash Mike and Jeff were talking about. I mean I knew about the ECU stuff, I just didn't realize the ETC could be changed. I'll have to look into this on down the road.
And while on the subject...
Quick question for either Mike or Jeff: Does the Osiris ETC update change the shift logic at all? Specifically, does it make the transmission stay in the gear you select in manual mode even at WOT (factory tuning downshifts)
None of the current reflashes directly alter the tcm at all. If anything changes regarding the shifting it's indirectly though whatever engine, speed, throttle position or rpm the tcm happens to use for it's own logic.
There are tons of info being posted by Mustang, Jeff and DaveB, and entertainment from our end
On topic, here is a good link to some info, too bad it is not complete
