2nd car commuter suggestions

Hmmmm, 8,000 miles in 3 months.
I'm not liking all this mileage I'm piling on my G.

I'm thinking of getting some type of used vehicle to use for
my daily commute to work. At least to use to commute in the winter. Anyone else have this dilema? Anyone have a solution/suggestions?

I also put the miles on my sedan. 45,000 now on my 2003.
Been thinking about getting a beater so I can keep the miles
off, but I love driving my sedan!

Re: 2nd car commuter suggestions

guys don't do it!!!! (well maybe for a winter car if you live up north, or maybe if you're leasing)... why did you buy a G35 in the first place... so you could do 90% of your daily driving in a beater? Of course not! Drive the car you love and damn the mileage! When you're ready to trade in or sell, do you think the extra thousand dollars in resale value will compensate for the fact that you bought a $32,000 car and didn't drive it?

edit: btw I own a beater, but I only drive it on weekends when I wanna drive sideways.

Very well put! You are correct. I bought my G35 so I could
have a blast while driving my daily driver. I'm having even more
of a blast since I had the Stillen sway bars installed. Damn it
is fun to drive, witness all the miles......

I drive an I30 as second car. I drive it not so much for the mileage as for the freedom of not worrying about whether it gets door dings when I park.

Re: 2nd car commuter suggestions

Just my $.02. I recently wanted to upgrade from a base 03 G35 to a 04 G35x(Fully Loaded) I had 44000 miles on my 03. Let me tell you, the difference in value between "normal" miles, in this case would have been somewhere in the neigborhood of 24-26000 and my 44000 was almost $6000!! This is according to the Galves used car value book which most dealers here in NJ use. Now I LOVE my G and love to drive it, but in the end, I am not rich and almost died when I was shown the difference in price. A friend of mine works at the dealer and showed me the book. In the end though, We worked out a good deal and I am now driving my X. I have now gone out an bought a 'beater' so i do not run into the same situation again. So I would tell anyone, get a beater. Even if it saves you 10000 miles in the end it is worth it, IMHO...

Re: 2nd car commuter suggestions

Holy mileage adjustment jasijay!!!!! Not trying to flame, but any dealer that wants to charge you $0.33/mile is simply ripping you off, and you should've gone out of state if all dealers in NJ use this insane formula. I think the standard deduction for extra miles is like 9 or 10 cents per mile. Here's my car (with 50,000 miles) on edmunds.com:

Trade-In
National Base Price $22,612
Optional Equipment $1,778
Automatic On/Off Headlights $70
Power Moonroof $525
Bose Audio System $321
Garage Door Opener $73
Power Driver Seat w/Memory $146
Sport Package $248
Automatic Climate Control (2 Zone) $161
Power Passenger Seat $161
Automatic Dimming Rearview Mirror $73
Color Adjustment Off White $25
Regional Adjustment Zip Code 78748 $45
Mileage Adjustment 50,000 miles $-1,882
Condition Adjustment Outstanding $641
Total $23,219

So all I'm saying is I really think $6000 for a 20,000 mile overage is out of the ordinary. Better luck on your next trade in.

Re: 2nd car commuter suggestions

Max;
I totaly agree with you it sounded upsurd! I had looked up my car in NADA and Kelly and they both showed me about 22,500-23,500 for my car. I finaly ended up getting the 23,500 for my car which I was happy about and got a great deal on an 04 fully loaded X. I am still a little leary about putting massive miles on my G. If you look at "normal" miles the trade in vale is great, for my car would have been about $26,000-27,000. So, I drive my beater to work, which is about 35 miles one way. Any other driving is done smiling in my 'G'.

Re: 2nd car commuter suggestions

my problem is i get attached to a car if it's good to me and in that case i'll drive it for 10 or 15 years until its not worth much to anybody anyway. i've got an 89 iroz convertible that i bought new and passed to my daughter with over 135,000 miles and it still looks like new and has only cost me about $1200 over normal maintenance costs for repairs.

if i was going to trade every few years, i guess i'd feel like some of you. but i want to drive the G cause i love to drive it so that's what i'm gonna do and keep it for 10 years. then the depreciation doesn't matter because you recover it by not having car payments continuiously for 10 years.
