Oil Consumption, how bad is it?
Ok, so i feel like an utter noob, but i'm seriously considering trading up for an 06 6mt Sedan this summer. Find a lower mileage one for a good price. I'v realised that i have been missing out severally. I can drive my friends 00 GTI and it is just so much more involving than my car, even if it is slower...
I am just curious though, because i know an 06 wont have warranty very much longer (except the power train to 70k) and i was wondering, if it DID get oil consumption, how much does it burn? Like, if i ran out of warranty and it started burning oil, a new engine would be a lot, so i dont really want to deal with that.
My 96 Outback now burns like like a civ on the interstate. 200 miles and it will go from Full to empty on the dipstick. I assume a 6mt G wont be that bad, but i was just wondering how bad it actually gets on these cars.
Thanks for handling my 14k newbness!

I'm just curious as to when OC really surfaces.
It seemed to me that anyone who has had it, it started fairly early on, and if it's made it 40 - 50,000 it should be ok.

Is there any way to tell visually when you go look at a used car? Not like you can say "let me check the oil and drive it 1K miles and check again"
Are the exhaust tips sooty (more than usual)??

kinda like the coupe 19's on pretty much all sedans
pretty much everyone runs the 5/16 spacer (i had both, and the 1/2 completely craps on the 5/16)
the whole "OEM" modding crap
every one just dose what the other guy dose, only a few actually do other things. it seems like people are afraid to try something new or whatever...kinda sad in away....im pretty sure im ganna get a a lot of lip for this, but hey, im just saying what i noticed on here, whatever haha
Why not get an STI and keep the G? Wouldn't the AWD help in the snowy seasons?
The oil consumption issues are there. The hardest part is finding a quality dealer and proving oil consumption.

I've been on this forum and my350Z for 6 years now. I wouldn't touch a Rev-Up with a 10-foot pole. Take a look around at all the people that mod and race thier RevUp G and Zs and take note of how of them are on thier 2nd or 3rd motors.
The chances of you getting the motor replaced under warranty are about nill unless the car that oil change records from day one. As for out of pocket costs to replace the short block, you're looking at around $3,000-3,500.
Other issues to consider with the 6MT are the weak clutch and weak syncros. The 6MT issues and it's general driveability were what steered me away from purchasing a 6MT.
As for your Outback burning oil, you better make sure it doesn't have the head gasket issue that afflicts a majority of the 2.5 DOHC "Phase I" Legacy GTs/Outacks from 1996 through 1998.

I would have no fear. I bought my car with one previous owner, knowing if there was a oil consumption problem he wouldnt have kept the car for 40k miles. I love my car and the 6 spd is a joy to row through, but since you already have a g35 I can say I would recommend trying something else. The subaru 06+ STI is a wonderful daily driver that will leaving you smiling everytime you drive it. You just have to deal with its exterior styling. Otherwise I would also try a 06+ BMW 330. That car is an excellent driver's car, without sacrificing anything.
i have an 2003 auto. it burns oil (as much as a 7 year old car would i guess) it burns mostly when its revved. IE high speed highway driving where its revving @ 3k rpm for long periods. or if it revs up high.
