Cru,

I've been following this thread for a while. Glad you stood your ground and are getting it taken care of!

Re: HELP! Engine Failure!

gurgen,

I can say it is the same for BMW. I bought my 2000 323Ci Certified Preowned in 2002 with 22,000 miles on it. Immediately I noticed a "knocking" sound in the rear end. After some investigation, BMW and myself were able to focus in on the driveline as the culprit. At first they were great - in three seperate visits, since they couldn't positively identify what was causing it, they replaced different parts to see if it solved the problem. Each time it did not.

Although the sound was minor, my car only had 22,000 miles on it - I wanted it to be perfect (I'll admit it, I'm **** when it comes to cars). After the third time, the service manager had the gall to tell me that "I'll just have to live with it".

Worst thing he could say to me.

By the next day I had contacted BMW of North America, who was fantastic. I set up an appointment to meet with the regional service manager for BMWNA, and he immediately authorized an entire new transmission.

I was very pleased.

As for service managers, they often seem to be clueless. They aren't servicing mountain bikes at Wal-Mart. When you buy a premium car, you expect premium treatment. What they tried with me, and especially what they tried with Skeleton, is unacceptable.

And Skeleton - I'm happy to hear that your engine is being taken care of - way to stick to your guns.

-Rich

Re: HELP! Engine Failure!

Last week I took my Sedan in for warranty work on the brakes. I took it to Cutter Infinity in Santa Barbara. In talking with the service manager, I mentioned the problem that Skeleton_Cru has been having relative tot he failure and the warranty problems. I also addressed the fact that I have Stillen Mods on my car, CAB Exhaust, CAI, Grounding wire kit, lowering springs, etc, was I going to have the same problem? He informed me that Stillen parts/mods are covered by Inifinity warranty. I even shared with him how I was going to supercharge the car, and they offered to do the install for me and back the warranty. Later he learned from the factory rep (supposedly) that Inifitity did back the blower at first, but do to a couple of engine failures (from dealer installed set ups, not Stillen installed blowers, they no longer cover that portion; however the other mods they still cover). I then spoke with Rex at Stillen and he also told me that they do a lot of work with Inifinity and yes their parts are covered under the Infinity factory warranty. He also told me that they are not aware of ANY engine failures due to their supercharger.

He (the service manager) then told me, that based on the information I gave him from these threads that he would not see any corralation between his (Skeleton_Cru) mods and the engine failure, expecially since he had just had it serviced prior to the anomaly. I wonder if he would have taken it to another dealer, if he would have had this same problem. I realize his hands were tied considering his location at the time. It's just awful that they would pull this crap.

My point, I guess is, Stillen also is covered under warranty and another dealer, of course, with out seeing the car, had a much different opinion than Cru's dealer.

I also wanted to mention it's great that they are fixing it. I hope that they do an exceptional job for you. You should have never gone through this in the first place.

Re: HELP! Engine Failure!

UPDATE:

I spoke with Ron again today and asked for an update. He said he is fighting to get an entire engine replacement for my car. It seems the Warranty Call Center thinks they should only replace the short block. So Ron has been working to get a new engine authorized. I agreed with him, I want a new engine not just the short block. So it looks like a may be in for a bit of a wait, but it will be worth it to get my car fixed right the first time.

I have wondered the same thing Brenda. Thanks for the support!

Re: HELP! Engine Failure!

Well when Nissan replaced my VQ back in 98. They ordered a new small-block. Which basically was the block, heads, pistons, rods, bearings, all assembled already. The only other parts they had to install was mainly, external stuff.

Re: HELP! Engine Failure!

What caused your engine to fail back in '98?

Re: HELP! Engine Failure!

Cru;

Just to clear up any potential confusion, a short block generally does not include the heads. For this reason, while it might make your engine run fine without bad sounds, I don't think I'd be satisfied. EVERY part that relies on constant oil lubrication could potentially be damaged in an oil starvation suituation. You don't want to have an expensive failure in a cylinder head at 100,000 miles when the car is off warantee.....when in reality those parts should last more than double that mileage. And it's not just the heads either; a shortblock probably wouldn't include the oil pump or timing chain assembly either; other items that really should be replaced.

Re: HELP! Engine Failure!

Comming from a dealership background - I can assure you that if you ask for it, you will be compensated something - I didn't read the whole thread just the last page - if your vehicle is still under warranty - i would personally ask to speak to the service rep for your area - 5 weeks of down time, is certainly a justifiable reason to pay at least 2 or 3 - lease or purchase payments if the vehicle is finaced. I have seen it done hundreds of times - with several auto manufacturers...

And... as a side note, that was a horrible call on the service managers part, that is a direct result of vehicle use...

good luck...

Re: HELP! Engine Failure!

Thanks for the info BLICX13. My brother said the same thing about the dealership making a payment or two on my car for the time they have had it. I will definitely pursue that.

Water injested in the stock intake. It was raining so hard, and some water somehow worked its way into the intake.

Re: HELP! Engine Failure!

It does usually include the heads on the VQ at least it did back in 98 when mine was replaced.

Did they replace the engine under warranty for this, or did you have to claim insurance? I have heard of this happening to a lot of cars over the years. This was on the Maxima, right?
